Started Lyme Treatment - Gut Issues for 1 Month - How to Cope?

I'm new to this forum and to Lymes. My story is not as dramatic as most: been tired and getting sick alot, plus tons of achiness & intestinal issues over past 2 years. Just 2 months ago diagnosed with chronic Lymes. Last month I started "pulsed" antibiotic treatment which included Azithromycin+Septa DS+Omnicef+Tinidazole. My doc, a Lyme specialist, gave me a ton of Probiotics to take with these abx, but still, within 3 days, I had diahhrea hit and continue for almost 3 weeks, on and off. He advised to stop taking the abx immediately, so I did (I only took the abx for 1 week).

As of today, I have been off them for 4 weeks and still having gut issues. I have tried everything from BRAT diet, removing gluten, sugar, etc (did that a while ago); just yesterday got Green Vibrance b/c I read about it on here.

So now I'm sicker than before I even knew I had Lymes! I went from having some good days to having all difficult days full of intestinal issues, diahhrea, on/off fevers, and extreme fatigue + all the achiness. Have not exercised in over a month.

Has this happened to anyone else and what did you do? I've taken abx before, but not this many of course, but never got this sick from them.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I'm newly diagnosed with Lyme Disease also and have probably had it for a long time. I was told a long time ago when I had a lot of constipation that if you take enough probiotics, you will have a bowel movement. Perhaps the probiotics are too strong for you and you need to cut back on them. Additionally, I believe a lot of probiotics are grown on dairy products so you could be reacting to the culture.

I know the herbals I was started on are causing mild nausea and I'm just miserable when my gut feels like that. I hope you get some resolution soon.

thank you Diana, i was also too just starting to wonder about all the probiotics. I have no idea what to do at this point, so confusing. i have a call in to talk to my LLMD tomorrow. maybe I need a new doc?!!

Hi!

I am sorry to hear you are having a difficult time. I just want to give an opinion, just from my personal experience- if I understand correctly did your doctor prescribe all 4 drugs to be pulsed as the first treatment?

I don't know the dosages, but those drugs are some tough ones to start with. It also may make it difficult for you to report what might be working, what might make you herx., or what your body may not be able to tolerate or even side effects of drugs. 

Do you have co-infections? Of course this makes everything more complicated.  You may want to back down on doses, etc.  I am concerned that you are much worse(I did this to myself thinking the more suffering the better LOL.) I made things so difficult for myself and I don't want you to do the same.

Hi Jen,

I take 100 billion cfu's multi-species probiotic supplement daily. My stools have been loose and I 'go' 3 to 4 times daily. Two weeks ago I had watery diarrhea and was 'going' several times a day. My LLMD had me stop the antibiotics for a few days and had me add the supplement S. Boulardi 2 capsules twice daily. I am back on antibiotics and this is the first time that my stools have been normal in a year.

My LLMD tends to be on the safe side and SLOWLY builds up to higher doses. Maybe you can mention to your LLMD that you want to start slowly, too.

Thanks Patty for the info. May i ask... what antibiotics are you taking? The same amount and type as I mentioned above? My bowels have just now started to slow down after being off them for a month -- and I only took them for 5 DAYS before the diahhrea got the best of me and I stopped.

I talked to my LLMD 2 days ago and told him I'm still having bowel issues and he said I might not be able to handle the antibiotics. I asked him about 'slowly phasing them in' and he has done that but is hesitant to start again with me right now till my gut clears up. He did not think that taking 4 abx at a time was a lot which completed astounded me! I also asked if I could try IV but he said I'd still have to take some orally. I'm not sure what to do now but I'm off everything and actually feeling better! But I haven't even begun treatment and I know the Lyme symptoms will be back soon.
