Better nutrition = herx???

So my super wonderful hubby got me a vitamix blender. FYI - AMAZING. I would recommend it to anyone. Downside it is SUPER expensive but you can get a used or refurbished one for $270 I believe (still expensive). So I used it last night and this morning. Basically there selling point is that it pulverizes everything so you get maximum bioavailability of nutrients. And I do agree. I put seeds in there and there are no seeds when I turn it off.

So two shakes later and I'm feeling herxy like doxy herxy. Mild fevers, nausea, general ill feeling. It waxes and wanes but could this be from all the nutrients I'm getting???

I did throw a hunk of ginger in this morning but it was maybe 1/4 - 1/2 tsp worth at most.

Just curious what others think about this?

I'm glad you got one! What all did you put in it? I got one a few months ago and I have a lot of kale and collards in the garden, so I used those along with an apple and felt better for doing it.

Yes, they are expensive, but they have a competitor that is cheaper, but, of course, the name slips my mind right now. I went with Vitamix since they have been around a long time.

Well I got the ninja which had amazing ratings and it was horrible I wouldn't recommend the kitchen model to anyone.

It was the Thai Eye opener recipe except I used a little bit more ginger and applesauce instead of an apple. :) It tastes like an orange smoothie with zing.

Blendtec is the other one I was thinking of. This site talks about several brands, http://rawfoodswitch.com/magick-shoppe/raw-food-kitchen-tools/ There are other reviewers too.

My Vitamix has just been recalled due to a faulty blade or something like that. I have a Pro3, but there were others too. I can post a link to where you need to go if you have one of the newer ones with the shorter, wider pitcher. They give an extra 1 year warranty and a gift, plus the new blades.

I thought the green smoothies were for detoxing. Maybe one needs to drink more water a while after having the smoothie to help flush out more. Just a guess.

My mom has Lyme and would make a fruit and weed smoothie every morning. She knows about edible weeds and would do half weeds and have fruit in her blendtec. She was feeling really good while on them. She had to stop for 2 months because she had surgery and recently decided to start up again. It made her so ill!! So it's possible to get a reaction.

Ginger is a great cleansing agent & along with all the other good stuff you added, it could have gotten some toxins moving out of your system, causing you to feel herx-y. Just a thought

I have a Norwalk juicer and have been juicing carrots and kale for several months now. I'm doing it for long term health, not necessarily for treatment of Lyme. Eating raw foods is very important because they are high in beneficial bacteria for the GI tract. You may get 20 billion bacteria in a probiotic, but eating raw veggies will give you a trillion or more per meal. And yes, a more healthy GI tract will cause you to herx as your GI flora isn't fighting off as much candida and other GI pathogens, they are freed up to fight the systemic bacteria from VBD.

Norwalks are nice juicers, it's just too bad they're so expensive that many people who would benefit from them can't afford one along with their medical bills. I'll get a press to use with my Champion juicer some day, not quite as good, but more affordable for many since used Champions are easy to find used for a low price.

I wanted to bump this because I returned my vitamix. I ended up getting a dud I think. Anyway I got the new Kitchenaid Diamond Blender and I LOVE IT. It is really hard to move the blender from the base - I literally have to bear grip it BUT it only costs $150 vs. the $500 I spent on the vitamix. It takes a little longer but I would recommend it to anyone.

Also curious about others thoughts on nutrition and herxing. I'm going to ask my herbalist the next time I go in.

I used to herx on green smoothies!! :-) Yes, with adding a ton of nutrition you will feel something like a herx, but it's because you are getting a sudden surge of nutrition that your body wasn't used to being able to have!

Reminds me, I need to get back into my green smoothies!
