Anyone Using Bactrim DS ?

Was wondering if anyone has any information on this medication. The good the bad and the ugly...dont hold back. thnx.

I have been on it for several months, and I seem to tolerate it okay. I take all of my abx with food though, because otherwise I wouldn't be able to keep them down. I take several abx at the same time, so I can't be certain of how Bactrim alone would affect me; however, I think that it has contributed to some die-off -- not fun but it seems productive now that I'm in the 5th month of treatment. Finally starting to see some symptoms moderate.

Bactrim is an established antibiotic, but I believe that it is a sulfa drug and that some folks react badly to it. Be mindful of the side effects and communicate frequently with your doctor's office if possible to try to distinguish herxing symptoms from those of a reaction (not an easy assessment at times). Ive read some scary stuff about it. Im not allergy prone but am a little leary of it based on what Ive heard.
And I have heard others like yourself say they are tolerating it fine.

Ironically... I had herx reactions to this for years. My doctor put me on it in August and nothing. Didn't feel any of the stomach pains I had felt previously.

My legs felt heavy on it and my stomach would hurt really bad on it years ago before I knew what was going on. I thought I was having a horrible rxn. I know better now! Good luck!

Our daughter started out with this, but developed an allergic reaction after about a week. Facial swelling, body covered with itchy hives, it wasn't fun. It took about 2 weeks of prescription anti-histamines to clear up.

I have been on Bactrim for the last 4 days for intestinal problems caused by other antibiotics. I feel spacey and tired on it.

Hey, BarnGurl.

Did you start the Bactrim yet? I'm scared of it, too and just have it sitting in the cabinet. However, I know people on here are taking it and doing okay, and my mom told me she's taken it, too. That eases some of the anxiety for me.

I also know that I'm willing to try anything to help me get better. I know it is a strong antibiotic, but I get the sense that the really bad reactions are allergic reactions, and not necessarily side-effects.

Oh by the way- my doctor told me to take half of it, so it won't be the full "DS" strength.

Hi Bindspire, I did not start it because I met with a LLMD and he got me on a different combo. I put it away though in case I need it in the future. My doctor said you can start on lower doses of the medicines to see how you tolerate it and then work up to the prescribed dose. You may want to try that. Are you off all medications ow or just that one ?

I'm still taking 500 mg of clarithromycin. I have a long way to go, but I actually think I'm a smidgen better, as compared to 2 months ago.

I was on it a long time ago, and know that I am allergic, but I have no idea what reaction I had! Feel like a total idiot when I tell doctors this, but I really have no clue. I think you've inspired me to look into it with the doctor I was seeing then.

I was on 200 mg and not getting better. Am now on very high doses and functioning overall much better.
I think it will take me about a year to recover.

Hey, Barngurl.

I've been taking it for the last week now, and I think it might be helping. I'm only taking 400 mg a day, with 500 mg of my other abx, but will increase this week.

Hey Barngurl,

Just started 2 days ago on bactrim 800/160 mg twice a day. So far so good, just little pains here and there. I'll keep you posted in a week or so.
