Hello,
I had a tick bite on July 2013, and didn't have a rash. My symptoms begin on august 2013 and i was on doxycycline on September 10 100 mg twice a day for 5 weeks, than got on cefuroxime axetil for 5 weeks 500 mg twice a day alone with azithromicin 500 mg a day. I just read very bad side effects such as tendon rupture and nerve damage about cefuroxime, so I have started taking 1500 mg amoxicillin along with azithromicin. I have a terrible ned and shoulder pain for three days now. My doctor's office is closed, I have been calling them no answer and they don't have an answering center. I will immediately switch doctors as soon as he opens his office again. I have to ask my question here, since I went to urgent care and they said they need a letter from my doctor in order to give me different antibiotics. I have told them my doctor is missing, he is not in his office, other wise i wouldn't be at the urgent center. Anyway, I left there without any treatment and medication. Why do I have pain with amoxicillin? is it a reaction. I know I am not allergic to it. What should I do? Also, I have my blood works keep coming back negative, I finally sent my blood work to Igenex, but haven't got the results yet. Has anyone send their blood work to Igenex? I appreciate any response to my post.

Hi and welcome to the forum. What you're most likely experiencing is a die-off reaction or herx from the amoxy. When I was on Doxy I had bad muscle pain in my back which is actually a good sign that it's killing the infection. Unfortunately my doc cut me off after 4 weeks so I never cleared the infection. If you can tolerate the pain don't stop. If not then you can cut down or stop for a short time and resume. Many times when you wash it out and resume you won't have the same herx you did. It's weird but it does change often is what I've noticed. I've also noticed that some natural products give me that same back muscle pain such as monolaurin. The whole thing is strange because that's not a normal Lyme symptom for me.

As far as testing is concerned, the IGeneX results for me was night and day compared to other labs. I had many more positive bands with them than another lab I tested through so I'm a big fan. Hope you have the same luck I had.

Hi 2 things, if you are on antibiotics many blood tests will come back negative. They usually like you to be off abx for 6 - 9 weeks for blood tests. Also the disease lives in muscle and tissue so blood tests are not very reliable.

I had to move the amoxicillin from 2000 mg a day to 3000 mg a day due to breakthrough pain. Hope this helps you.

I am new (like today new) to this forum and I really know nothing about Lyme. Until IGeneX all my tests came back negative. Took 3 wks for me to get the test results back, just got them in late Oct. I've not started treatment yet, never took antibiotics and I have constant pain in my neck, shoulders, hands, legs and back, among other issues. I'm sharing this with you as maybe it's not the antibiotics causing the pain, maybe it's a progression of the Lyme?

Thank you for all the answers. I had 2 blood tests without antibiotics, and thy were negative. Then I had one more test done with the antibiotics, and Lyme disease specialist has told me is doesn't matter, we are looking for antibodies antibiotic wouldn't effect that. I put myself on Amoxicillin because, my doctor is not in town. I don't know when he will be back. I will call another doctor on monday, and hopefully I will be able to have antibiotics. Pain is very bad, and my fingers also hurting a lot. So you think this is a die off? I didn't have these symptoms when I was on cefuroxime axetil.

Yes I do. I had muscle pain on doxy, monolaurin and oregano oil but not Rifampin. The monolaurin pain was severe and definitely die-off. If you can't take it as I know some can be torture then stop the amoxy for a few days and slowly work back up the dosage. I'm doing that now with the monolaurin.

hi mainerlady..i was in chronic pain initially which quickly moved into a downward spiral of neuro symptoms.
These were the worst of all even worse than the pain. Yes I would move on the abx quickly bc once it takes hold of your cns it can be devastating.
