Hi JenJac, I was quoted $500 with credit card # held in advance to assure no cancellation out here in Cal. The point is, that's half what you were quoted. I'd call every llmd you can reach by phone, email, and then later, in person. You might want to consider a few hours of driving/gas vs. up front cost if you can increase the candidate pool.
I know Cal isn't helpful, it's just some perspective. Yes, it's blasted expensive. There are probably more llmd's out there than here just because we don't seem to have reached the blatant saturation needed for the medical community to accept it's here. That means our statistics don't show what's going on. Fewer people here even get a diagnosis because it 'doesn't exist' here. So, people are sick with something undefined and don't know to seek help from an llmd.
If you read some of what other kids have gone through you'll have more awareness of what might be a symptom. Not every temper tantrum means Lyme, but if you start thinking 'what the heck?' or 'who are you?' then, you might need to look at Lyme. If you wonder why he says 'I don't understand' something you KNOW he knows, or if he complains of the fifth pain of the day before lunch, or , or, or...it might be Lyme.
I've heard people say a long enough initial course of antibiotics can end the whole problem. No grief. I don't know.
My son is going for an MRI tomorrow. He had the classic rash - 5 expanding bulleyes - but 'there's no Lyme here' so he was given prednisone. He tested negative. He has 35 symptoms now, 10 months later.
Good Luck to you both. I really hope everything ends quickly and happily. :)
