Nausea after starting new protocol - herx or side effect?

I just found out I have Chronic Lyme, have probably had it for many years.

I've been on Minocycline (100mg bid) for 6+ weeks, was on Malarone (stopped last week since we no longer suspect Babesia).

I started Rifampin (300mb bid) last Weds with the Mino. I'm super nauseous and feel terrible and exhausted - I'm suspecting these are herx symptoms. I'm trying to eat but it's proving difficult to stomach even making food.

I'm also taking:
Phyto-ADR 3 in am (adrenal support)
Vital Detox Formula (3/day)
Magnesium
VSL#3 Probiotic
Omega 3
Vit D3

Has anyone else experienced this nausea and will it pass?? Any suggestions? I feel so weak that I don't feel like preparing food, which makes me more weak... etc. ugh.

Hi Beth,

When are you taking the Rifampicine? Half an hour before breakfast?
Some people can get nauseous taking it before breakfast. I didn't, but my sister did, so she had to take it with her breakfast, that was much better.

You didn't have any problems with Mino I guess? (just asking cause it made me very nauseous)

When I was taking Mino + Malarone I took them with food. I was nauseous, but that got better as time went on. The Rifampin says to take on an empty stomach (I guess for better absorption).

But I have to eat when I get up, so I eat then wait about 1 hr and take both Mino and Rifampin. Maybe that's what's killing my stomach. Tough to figure it all out when you're changing so many things at once!

I also seem to be getting more heart palps and super heart pounding - possibly from the Phyto-ADR. Or Lyme/Bart. Not sure. I'll call my ND tomorrow and ask her if I can separate the abx doses or if I can take with food to see if that helps.

It is better to take the antibiotics apart from each other, I've found. Rifampin is much better handled by itself. And try different kinds of food to take with them until you find the right cushion. For example, I find one drug is better with carbs and the other only is held down by fat.

Another thing that can help is spreading the doses out farther within the 24 hour time period, ie. 2 doses a day, take 12 hours apart, 3 doses, 8 hours apart. I had to set an alarm to take medicines in the night, but it made a big difference in being able to tolerate them.

I also have found that sitting down for 15 to 30 minutes after I've taken the medicine really helps. Some drugs say to stay upright, but I've found that isn't enough, any jostling can make for a whole day of nausea.

Thanks so much for your advice. I know when I took Mino with almond butter and celery I did fine. So maybe I can do that and separate out the Rifampin so I can figure out what works best for that.

Such fun we're having! ;) At least I got an hour of sleep today. That was a blessing.

Any Rifampin or rifabutin type is the worst.
I use children's liquid benedryl in small sips. It calms immune response.
hard to know whether I have AB reaction or herx, but if ANTIHISTAMINES help, I think its herx.
also, valium is used to treat black widow bites because it stops the effect of neuro toxins.
I actually think all doctors should require patients to have valium on hand to help with die off.
this isone of the ways seizures occur...so I keep the valium and benedryl on a low dose when needed when in treatment. Im not a doctor, but a very experienced patient.
it gives a little relief and I do not feel drugged.

Hi everyone, new to the site. Has anyone considered Sponagule wellness? Or Dr J Schaller, I would appreciate any feedback regarding this. Please help, suffering like everyone else :(

lyme, possible bart, in process of further testing, seeing id doc in MI, and possible a new lyme doc, Morningstar, or considering Sponagule in FL.

Yes! I had nausea when I was taking my antibiotics (currently on a break) and the only thing that helped me stomach was peppermint tea. When I'm off of them I don't have any issues with my stomach & I was also taking 2 different probiotics to help keep my stomach healthy.

Thanks gineranne8 - I got some peppermint tea and that seems to help. I also separated the Minocycline and take it with food and take the Rifampin an hour later. I think it's better. Time will tell once I get some energy back. I feel a bit better, but the muscles in my back are soooo sore, right up my spine.
