What tramatic event in your life caused Lyme to take over?

I just want to hear your stories.

What did you go through before or during the start of all this? It seems most of us went through something - no matter how big or small the "event", I'm curious.

Surgery on my foot....then my symptoms exploded.

2010 - Elderly Father had surgery - in hospital for 5 weeks, got dependant on sleeping pills and ativan...but we didn't know he was even on the drugs.
He got discharged from hospital...and had severe anxiety - no one knew why (we now know it was withdrawl) - was then given presc for ativan and zopiclone...he ended up in the psych ward. He was never the same after that. Within two months he was ready for a nursing home. Devastating to me. I was working full time, and driving 45 minutes each way to visit him after working a 8 hour day. Next three years - fighting with Psych dr about overmedicating him - trying to bring my father "back".
2013 -april pinched nerve injury - from repetetive strain at desk job.
2013 - may - hormonal issues -
2013 - June - 20 year old son (our only child) moved out of our home.
2013 - september - neurological issues - the start of my lyme symptoms.
Yup - 2013 was very stressful.

2006 - my ex cheated with and left me for a (now former) friend of mine. I was already sick but, everything got worse from that point forward.

Hodgkin's Lymphoma stage IIIb at age 15,5. Biopsy also showed EBV in the tumors.

I think that the sudden death of my husband in 2010 had already weakened me and then I broke 3 toes on my right foot ,resulting in meltdown in Feb 2012 sad

Interesting question, as we never saw any rash or other signs such as high fever that we can remember. The extreme fatigue started in October 2012. In May 2012 he began to have a plantar wart that was terribly painful and the darn dermatologist gave him a 'shot' right on it that was supposed to help. Of course he nearly went through the roof with pain and it dispersed the wart all over his foot over the course of the next several weeks. I spent the entire summer putting medicine on his feet and taking him to the dermatologist who froze the warts--again very painful. I wonder if all that left him completely vulnerable to the Lyme... confused

Must have gotten infected 4/2000 because in 5/2000 came down with the most painful, 10 day life threatening 'flu' imaginable. Dr's did nothing, except the ER did give me low dose, short term antibiotics because they said my liver was 3x its original size. No questions or followups from the dr's.

Bought first home 10/2007. Jump ahead to 12/24/07. Went to work and found out I was fired, because I questioned the owners request for me to file illegal worker papers for new employee. Then, a month later in the new house, on third floor cleaning, someone broke into the house! They left after I yelled the cops were on their way. Over $3k worth of house damage and I was so afraid I was unable to leave house for almost a year!

And that's when all the pages and pages of symptoms started, beginning with all the mental issues of fear, anxiety, panic attacks, paranoia, etc. (babs/bart), and then the physical symptoms began.

I've been a medical mystery to many drs who all just wanted to label me with their ignorant diagnosis'.

Finally found a dr to start me on my road to health. Only 14+ yrs later.

Taking constant care of my father while he was dying. Having him pass in my arms. The straw that broke the camel's back, was arthroscopic knee surgery.

There's no telling for me, as by the time I was 9 yrs old, I was having late stage symptoms (arthritis, many headaches, days with no energy, and other symptoms). Although, I did already have RMSF and Bartonella, so those infections may have set me up for Lyme or Lyme may have set me up for the other infections to invade my body.

Here's mine (sorry, its long):

Nov. 2012 1st baby was born (best day of my life, but physically taxing) Had family/in-laws staying at our home for a total of 5 weeks following the birth. I know they meant well but it was stressful bc it was hard to get into our own routine with everyone there... Not to mention the only time I got to hold my baby is when I ducked away to breastfeed.

January 1st 2013 baby caught RSV an was hospitalized and there was a family altercation surrounding this. Very stressful.

February - April 2013 confined mostly to home due to the RSV and the cold WI winter - husband was gone a lot for work - no other family near

April - September 2013 - was fairly calm, but then .....

October 2013 - mom had knee replacement surgery I went to care for her, flu shot, PCP found lump on my back near my spine and was very concerned so had surgery to remove (it was a lipoma), quit breastfeeding. Symptoms began (parathesias and insomnia - thought it was hormonal at first)

November 2013 - still had insomnia and parathesias but things calmed a bit

December 2013 - travel for holidays - increase in insomnia and parathesias in limbs, also had headaches, lightheadedness, pain on top of my head - even hurt to touch, stiff neck, bladder infection, shingles, chest pain - doctors said it was stress and anxiety. First test for LD - negative

January 2014 - still had symptoms started getting vibration sensations in ankles/feet but again things calmed a bit

February 2014 - Found out we were moving to FL, then began moving process mid-Feb & BAM!!!!!! my world turned upside down. Muscle twitching, muscle aches, muscle weakness, anxiety through the roof, crying/panic attacks, fatigue, felt like my whole body was shutting down - left side of body worse than right, migrating pain, swollen lymph nodes, throat tightness, air hunger, vibrating sensations in ankles and feet, and more....

Feb - April - saw tons of doctors

April 2014 - met an angel (my LLMD)

Things are looking up significantly :)

First MAJOR flare (before knowing I was infected) happened when I returned to grad school while still working full time, and having just gotten married and already going through major marital issues.

Second major flare (before knowing I was infected) happened just after my divorce while I was working full time, performing in or rehearsing for 3 shows simultaneously, and had just bought a new home and arranged/did all the moving on my own.

Third major flare (before knowing I was infected) happened after I'd met the love of my life, but we tried to take a break because our overall situation was just too complicated (long distance, he in a brand new co-parenting arrangement). My heart seemed to be breaking. At that point, symptoms kept up so long that I knew the self-care I had done (pristine diet, stress reduction techniques, supplements geared towards supporting autoimmune issues) was not going to bring around a 'remission' as it had done for the previous two flares, and I worked harder to find a doctor to help me get to the bottom of it. And I finally found my LLND and she helped confirm the Lyme diagnosis... Now, in treatment for 10 months and have been in a constant cycle of flares/herxes and hoping it lets up soon.

So...most of mine were a combination of extreme emotional difficulties surrounded by over-committing my time and physical/mental/emotional resources.

The birth of my daughter! I came home with hip pain that I thought was related to birth....although it didn't hurt while delivering. A few weeks later I had burning feet, inner ears and tongue! My anxiety was out of control and I knew it wasn't post partem because she was an easy baby and I that was the one thing that took my mind off of whatever was happening to me.

about six months after what I think was when I initially contracted Lyme, I got into a relationship that turned psychologically, physically and sexually abusive. As that kept intensifying to the point where it was a daily occurrence, eventually that and the onset of my allergies threw me right over the edge and I was bedridden for about three months (while still facing abuse).
After I got out of the relationship and moved away, I relaxed more and things got better aside from the pain. I was pretty healthy for a good while, able to do vigorous exercise daily for close to a year, eating well, staying hydrated. Then I was trying to balance working in retail and going to college and things got more difficult. Then when I went into the winter term and was doing a heavy math course on top of three other courses and still trying to go from work to school and back to work-- everything kind of just rolled down hill. I think aside from that time spent bedridden, I'm the worst I have been in five years. But it's mainly the anxiety and the general flu-like symptoms that get to me. But I'll turn around eventually. (:

After my son was born, I had some mild symptoms. Then after I suffered a couple of miscarriages, my symptoms became progressively worse. I see it as a mixed blessing. If I hadn't had the miscarriages, I don't think I would have really understood that there was something wrong with me, other than being out of shape, and I wouldn't have sought help. Now I understand, and I'm on the path to healing.

All of your stories are very sad, but I am so glad we all know what is going on now.

For me, my spouse and I were on the verge of a divorce. I had a one year old and a three year old. And.... My father was just diagnosed with late stage melanoma. He died later that year.

Thankfully, my spouse and I stayed together and now I can't imagine my life without him. Life.....

The last stressful time I went through was having to place my mother in a care home, especially the stress of the last 3 weeks of her life. That was a little over a year a ago and I still feel the effects of it, which are mainly adrenals. She was in the home for 3 years, so I spent a lot of time there.

If I had it in my late 20s, it gradually came back after 2 deaths, 3 moves to different cities, having two babies, and having 2 houses built a year apart, all of this over 5 years.

I had issues for 4 months but no dr could figure out what was wrong with me. I got pregnant with my 2nd child and got worse and worse which dr's thought was a tough pregnancy. I had my daughter and never recovered until I found an LLMD. So pregnancy kicked everything into high gear.

Taking care of my cat as she died at home. My friends husband dying on the same weekend as the cat. My husband working insane hours and leaving house super early in the AM. Then toxic reaction to ativan caused massive sleep issues and a bad reaction to a spinal tap.
