More than a duckling

My son and I found an abandoned egg laying on the ground about 4 weeks ago... We brought it home, put it in a box under a heat lamp and turned it twice everyday. I thought... "It'll never hatch"...

Last night... A little duck made its way into the world as my husband, son, and I watched. My son said "welcome to word, baby ducK" as the little guy pushed his way out.

Today I took him to a wildlife rescue, and I sobbed as I was driving home... Not because I had to surrender the duckling, but because of what this meant to me...
I believe I needed this little miracle more than he needed me.

What a sweet story. It's amazing how animals can have such an impact on us. Good for you for rescuing the little guy too and being a good example for your son.

I have animal encounters in my yard all the time and they bring me a lot of peace. I was feeling a little down the other night and when I went to check to see if a door was locked, I saw something on the bottom of the window. It was a very young tree frog, sitting on the ledge and looking in the window watching the goings on. He gave me a chuckle before bed.

Birds let me know when their bath is empty It took a while for them to get this stupid human to understand. Humming birds will bath in the spray when I'm watering. Once in a while a Great Blue Heron will drop in for a mouse meal, so I enjoy that.

I hope you have more encounters like that.

Me too Girlie, I cry pretty easily these days. :,( oh well, what can you do... I just let it out! ;)

I seriously considered keeping the little guy, but it just didn't seem fair to him. But man was he cute! (Plus we are kind of at capacity with 3 dogs all between 50-90 lbs ... Yeah I know... and 1 cat - she's the BOSS! Not too sure how the duck would have acclimated into our home...

He was put in with other orphaned ducklings who will be "adopted" by their new mommy in a few days, and all will be released into the wild together in 6-8 weeks.
