Hey everyone!

Just started/added the ceftin last night (500 mg x2/daily).... I've been looking on the forum for Ceftin/Ceftin herx reaction/reaction to Ceftin... It looks like everyone has had a really rough time on this abx.

Can those of you who've taken it give me your experience?

When did you herx? How long? Feel better after/improve?

Thanks everyone. So far I'm okay, but I've only taken two pills.

I am on Ceftin, but only been on it a few weeks. I am wondering the same thing though re herx. I am also on Flagyl simultaneously, as I was told that the Flagyl is a good cyst buster so that the Ceftin has a better chance of killing the bugs... I have neuro Lyme in brain though so I don't know if it pertains to you.
If I find out anymore re the herx I will let you know.

This abx was just the worst for me. It made me extremely weak all the time and it made all my joints hurt. I was in nearly constant pain in most of my body. This for for a month because my doc insisted I stick with it. Now that I’m on something else I feel much better.

I wa on ceftin for 30 days this past march with septra, I dont recall having any isues but it was prescribed for b, adder issues. Llmd did mention at last week's visit ghT ceftin will likely be added after this round of mino and septra.

Ceftin was my main lyme drug. I started slow though I did 500 mgs/ day for 3 days - felt fine so then dr said to go to 1000 mgs/day. I didn't herx bad until probably 5 days in on the full dose (?). I just felt almost drunk like woozy, dizzy, vertigo. Was the worst in the AM but then Stupid Thirsty. I was literally drinking over a gallon of water a day (and replacing electrolytes) but I could not get enough. At just 90 lbs that is a lot of water. Called the dr and he said it was a herx. Took about 3 days but it calmed down.

It wasn't a bad herx for me. I didn't feel great but I wasn't bed ridden either.

Overall, it was a great lyme drug for me.

You mentioned Ceftin was your Lyme drug - do you know if it works on Bart as well? I have been told the vertigo is due to Bart and I am now on Ceftin and Flagyl. I am so dizzy with such vertigo symptoms I keep crashing into the walls. On these meds a few short weeks. Herx?

Hi Dannarahn,

I haven't heard of ceftin ever being used for co-infections but I could be wrong. A lot of people though seem to have flare ups of coinfections if their lyme is being treated effectively. Crashing into the walls is no fun.

I didn't have too much of the vertigo and wooziness at all- until I started that drug though. It could be a herx. Do you get breaks from the dizziness?

Delmar, Ceftin was one of the best abx for me!! I was on for about 3 months. I had to go on to something else because it wasn't as effective anymore. Hope it works as well for you! :-)

No breaks, continuous vertigo and balance issues. It's bizzare. Seems to have intensified and this could be a Herx to the Flagyl and Ceftin combo. I am seeing the doctor tomorrow and hopefully he will shed some light, although I seriously doubt it! I am going to ask about IV antibiotic, but I honestly don't know if an IV will help with Bart if that is indeed what's causing the vertigo... I am so confused!

Anyone - What meds are used in an IV, and do they help with Bart symptoms such as vertigo? Thanks!!

Check the peperwork you should got from pharmacist to see if dizziness is a side effect of the abx. I just started Minocycline and one of its side effects is dizziness. Also found out that abx can cause weight gain and watef retention. Can also affect psych. These were just for Minocycline. Sadly the cure can be just as frustrating as the disease.

According to info my llmd gave me ceftin adresses borellia in spirochete form.

Can someone help me here. I was diagnosed with Lyme Babesia fish and Bartonella . The Month of August the first medication the Dr. gave me was Ceftin 500 mg twice a day and I handled it fine even though I was so sick at that time. Then the Dr. started me on dapsone where I am now at 100 mg and then Methylene Blue where I am now at 250 mg daily. The Dapsone and Methylene Blue work fine with Gods help. Now two weeks ago I wanted to go back and take ceftin and I started 1000 mg a day for 15 days and got sicker and sicker .This Friday night I felt terrible. Yesterday was day number 16 and I only took 500 Mg Ceftin at night and this morning I am still feel very sick from it. Shaking away and crying. Not like yesterday but still not good. Can anyone try to explain.

hi Sam - sorry to hear you are suffering

my best guess is that the effects of Ceftin along side, or on top of, pretty powerful doses of MB and Dapsone are now additive - so not at all like Ceftin on its own when taken before, as you were expecting.

many abx work like this - which is in fact why they are often used in combinations - as together they work synergistically by attacking bacteria from more than one angle at a time - thereby killing more than they each would on their own.

the net result of more killing is then more herx like reaction - often surprisingly so - due to the synergistic effect - so my guess is that is what you are experiencing.

you may want to take a few days off the ceftin - or all abx - and let things settle and then go at it a bit more cautiously

Can it be that since I was on ceftin so long and got off my body isn't responding anymore to it in the right way. Or you just think its the Combination. Did I do a mistake by stopping it? The Drs. don't thing that ceftin is helpful enough for chronic Lyme.

i just think its the combination

i think you are experiencing herxhimer reactions due to the increased potency from taking it together with MB and Dapsone

plenty of LLMD's still use Ceftin in combinations with other abx

I really regret that I stopped it I feel like I can not start again. I just have to go up with dapsone and Methelyn blue and with gods help it may be a good choice.

you probably will be able to start it

just starting it at full dose on top of MB and Dapsone - which are both heavy hitters - is likely to be a lot to handle is all

many of us have to inch up on treatments to keep herx manageable

Ceftin/Cefuroxime is a great Lyme drug…possibly the best I have found. Two drugs have kept my life together for several years, and the first one is Ceftin.

Unfortunately, I have years of trial and error (and many MD, IDs, Internists, and LLMDs). I use lower doses, as I have temporarily given up in 100% clearance of my infection. Basically, I take Ceftin at 250mg daily ramping up to 500mg daily for about 10 day cycles and then a couple days off or a switch to Doxy for a week or so. Rinse and repeat and stay employed and live your life.

Don’t waste money on a bunch or supplements and crazy LLMDs. Stick to the basics that work, until u are ready to go for cure. I am convinced, for the chronic group, that cycling Ceftin or taking Disulfiram are the only two “cures” we have. Once I get some time off work and life, I intend to use Ceftin again in several cycles and cross my fingers.

Until recently (modern online suppliers), it was pretty difficult to obtain ABX on your own. Thats why I went to an LLMD. I chose an affordable one out in the country vs the fancy smancy ones.

Supplements are always lower priced went not purchased from a Drs office. It pays to research them first, and ask questions here. They helped me stay employed vs being unemployed and homeless.

For some people, there may not be a 100% cure, sometimes what you get is better than nothing. My goal was always to stay mobile and keep employment options open for easier work thats adaptable to my current condition. Suffering is part of life. Work to minimize it. In my case, this last 10% is the hardest to "fix" and maybe not possible.
