my son (4) had his white blood cell count come back slightly low this past CBC. It was 5.2 and the low end for his age would be 5.5. His llmd said that it can happen with lyme disease and it's treatments. She didn't seem worried, but is having him do another CBC to make sure it is either staying there or going higher again.
In fact I was going to ask a question here tonight or soon, about if it was too soon to test again already. I mean wondering if the two weeks it's been since his last CBC test is enough time for his wbc to have gotten higher. But she probably wants to make sure they're at least steady.
After his wbc was slightly low, I looked and looked online for things about that and lyme and antibiotics, and I don't know about doxy in particular, but I did read several places that long term antibiotics can cause lower white blood cell counts (my son was on them for about 4 months and then on fluconazole for a month with no antibiotics).
I also read that fluconazole can sometimes lower the wbc, and that even yeast can lower the wbc. All of which my son had, and a lot of lyme patients have.
It would be interesting to hear what your dr. says too. I do trust my dr. and am trying to not worry. When I googled low wbc and lyme I read a lot of people saying that they had low wbc's too at times.
I also read that things like zinc, selenium, vitamin C and echinacea can help to increase wbc. (although I read that echinacea can lower them if taken for too long, I think.)
Anyway, I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if maybe doxy could lower them too.
oh, and my son is feeling great, best he has since Oct. 2013, with barely a symptom now for weeks, so that helps me to not worry too.
