Ok. This is going to be a weird and maybe gross question, but here it goes anyways...

Lately, in the last week or two, I have noticed that my toilet is dirtier than usual. Specifically, there appears to be a black/dark something growing in the toilet under the water line. This has NEVER happened before.

I started taking 400mg of doxycycline daily a couple weeks ago and that seems to be the only thing that has changed in the last two weeks when this new "problem" seemed to "crop up." smilewinkgrin

Anyhoo, does anyone think this could be related to either excreting antibiotics or toxins in my urine causing this new toilet "fungus" (for lack of a better term; I'm not really sure if its a fungus)?

Anyone experience anything like this or should I see a doc (or shrink) because something is WRONG? shocked

I don't know about meds, but we have manganese in our water that will leave a black stain if our filter system is catching it, but I'd think you would've seen that before if you have it in your water system. Hopefully it's something simple like that. Or do you mean it's in the water and not a stain?

I don't think you need a shrink! LOL

It could be in the water. How often do you clean it with a brush? I clean for a living and 2 weeks or over it can get the ring.

Seasonal variations can also account for a lot of changes in water minerals etc. regardless of whether you are on city/well water. They flush our town water out I think twice a year to clean the pipes and we look it up everytime our water is brown (just for the first 30 seconds) - they are flushing the system.

Every once in awhile also, there will be a weird smell in the water for a day or two. You are much more likely to notice changes in water in your toilet anyway b/c the water sits. I wouldn't worry about it a whole lot.

I live in a pretty humid climate. I like keeping the toilet lid closed when I flush to keep the spray from going everywhere (that's the purpose of the lid). BUT… If I don't lift the lid again right after it flushes and forget and the bowl covered all day/night, I will have a nice black mold coating the bowl within a couple of days.

I also have to add those bleach discs to the tank. too keep it from getting really bad (which I hate because they are bad for the environment—but my health comes first right now). And the other thing I noticed, is that once I started consuming more healthy enzymes and probiotics, this mold grows even faster. ;)

Hmm. I have four toilets, and only the one in my master bath does this. It's the one I use most often, but the others get more overall use.

Thanks for the responses. We clean the toilet regularly (every 7-10 days) and this just started happening about a couple weeks ago. I just thought it was weird that it coincided with my ab treatment.
