Could mold be the missing link?

So I've been treating aggressively for Lyme and babs since March 2014. Have good months and then REALLY bad spells. My symptoms at their worst, (last two months) leg weakness/paralysis (had 4 MRIs done), extreme dizziness/vertigo, and eye issues - pain, blurry, red....I'm on mepron artisimin, biaxin and host of herbals including A-L. I'm also compound heterozygous for MTHFR, taking stuff for that.

My LLMD finally ran a test for mold a few weeks ago, and just got the results back....it came up to almost 10x the limit. Years ago at my office, we had black mold and were exposed to it, and had to leave while the building was remediated. I'm not sure what my current environment has floating around.

I haven't yet talked to LLMD about the results yet, but I'm almost hopeful that this has been the reason I haven't stayed well, at least it seems to "fit" especially with my neuro symptoms that I just couldn't shake.

Anyone have any experience with mold and treatment? I guess I would treat with my LLMD, but is there a specific doctor who specializes? I wouldn't think so, just like Lyme it's going to tough to find that person :(

I would say with test results like that, that the mold will definitely have to be treated before you can get any further with your Lyme treatments.


I don't know enough about mold issues to know if all of your symptoms are caused by mold, but the symptoms you listed could also be from Bartonella. Just a thought on something to check on.

I finally saw a Naturopath, who is also a LLND last May because of my horrendous allergies I had been suffering with for years. Tried every med on the market and nothing helped. She felt it was either gluten or Lyme. Tried going GF and no change, tested for Lyme and found to be positive.

Began using A-L drops and I could not handle them, Herxed horribly all of the time. about the same time, I began to have an elevated heart rate all of the time (110 to 160 at rest). She had me back off on the drops to 3 twice a day ( had been at 15). no improvement in the heart rate or the herxing. One particularly bad day in January, my wife called her and she had us go in.

She squeezed us in between other appointments. I was shaking so badly she called her husband, also a LLND in to the room. Long story short, he noticed a strange rash on my arm. This is a blood red irregular shaped rash that comes and goes. He immediately asked me about mold exposure. I own a business that had been housed for about eight years in a 200 year old barn with a very wet granite foundation.

They explained that Mold and Lyme bacteria are similar and that as the bacteria die, both release toxins that cause all of the wonderful feelings we all enjoy :). They had me stop the drops and prescribed an anti fungal and an abx by an atomizer; Muciprin and Amphtercin . I have seen an improvement. My mucous production has reduced and I am hopeful that I will be able to start attacking the Lyme before much longer,

The test for the mold was quite expensive, $700 I believe which insurance did not cover. My positive results for Mycotoxins was quite high. I do not have the results with me so I can not say how high. I have read on this forum that there is a much less expensive swab test available, but I believe it is not as definitive.

Mold is also a Biotoxin illness with almost the exact same symptomology as Lyme Disease. The first thing you can do is have an HLA-DR blood test done to see if you have a mold-susceptible genetic haplotype. about 21% of us do. Dr Richie Shoemaker's book and website, "Surviving Mold," are the best resources I've come across.

Thanks Erthwkr! I am very suspicious at this point that it is mold / fungal. I seemed to get the weird blood rashes after eating mushrooms, which are fungus. Thanks for the info. :)
