Did you perhaps take too much? I know Ashwagandha is a mild GABA-agonist, meaning it has an affinity for GABA receptors in the central nervous system. This is the the mechanism by which the medication class, benzodiazipines (valium, xanax, etc), work. A main side effect of this type of med is a floaty, sleepy feeling. I'd check the dosage, as you don't need too much to achieve the desired effect. It'd be easy to take too much.
If not, then there are several other herbs you can look into. The type of herb you're looking for is an adaptogenic herb. These herbs are pretty well studied and many athletes use them. The Russian Olympic team has been known to give eleuthero to it's athletes for improved endurance and performance. Eleuthero and Rhodiola Rosea are a couple of herbs that have adaptogenic properties that you could look into, and they do not work by the previously mentioned GABA mechanism, so most likely won't give you that zoned out feeling.
