OMG. Who wants to hear what the doctor said when my husband asked for a Lyme Disease test?

So, my husband went to the doctor today for blood work & to request a Lyme Disease test.

The doctor told him the Lyme Disease Test is useless and doesn't mean anything... the doctor said even if it is positive it doesn't mean he has Lyme. He said if it was positive it would just mean that he has antibodies and he wouldn't have Lyme because his body is fighting it. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! !! No really. Is this doctor for real?? If his test comes back positive it just means he has antibodies and his body is fighting it... so he wouldn't have Lyme Disease????


I just got my positive test last month and he has always felt the same as I do so we thought he should check it out and get tested.

He told him its useless and asked him if he still wanted to do the blood test anyways? My husband said yes.


I'm fuming. The stupidity.

Aren't Doctors supposed to be smart? I'll leave it at that.

Doesn't even make sense - what he said.

So, this is the regular healthcare test, right? good luck (insert sarcasm) if it's the same as the B.C. one.

Mine was two-tiered - IFA was negative, so they wouldn't proceed with the WB.

Then I did Igenex, and I was Igenex positive.

I'm wondering if the Docs out here in B.C. are a little more educated, open about Lyme disease, as mine accepted my Igenex results and has been supportive.
Also, I have spoken to a few pharmacists who discussed with me the lack of accurate tests and treatments....
Or...maybe I've just had good luck with my Dr. and the pharmacists.

Im so so so annoyed and wish I was there at that doctor appointment. Oh man. It might of gotten a little loud in there, though :/

But come on. He has a 35% chance of it even coming out positive if he has Lyme... but the doctor is saying even then if it does come out positive it doesn't mean he has Lyme Disease, but instead it would mean he has antibodies and his body is fighting it off??? Come on, the CDC isn't even that stupid.

If you have a positive Lyme Disease test....you HAVE Lyme Disease. What the heck was this doctor thinking?

Is there a class in med school called Anti-Lyme 101? Or are doctors views biased by views of their peers and other professionals?

The ignorance is just too widespread for it not to be some kind of conspiracy or intentional bashing spread from IDSA to the conventional medicine field.

The docs take their cue from CDC/IDSA. If you want to get angry, then get mad at the CDC/IDSA with their absolute power. Until WE demand otherwise, they will decide.

My husband also asked about testing in the states out of curiosity, if it was better. The doctor told him they are a for profit organization and there job is to hand out positives.

happyjo: True, but the CDC doesn't say that if we get a positive Lyme Disease test that it actually isn't Lyme Disease. This doctor straight out said that "Even if the Lyme test is positive that doesn't mean you have Lyme Disease. The tests are useless." That is where I'm mad at the doctor. What FALSE information. That is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard a doctor say. The CDC would NOT agree with this. Instead they would say, if you have a positive Elisa and Western Blot...you have Lyme Disease.

Your husband needs a new doctor.
Please help him find a new doctor, as this one is very incompetent.

Since I received my positive Lyme test, I have had to go through many doctors b/c they didn't believe I was still sick.
One even tried to force me off a Doxy rx that another doctor had given me for the Lyme.

Doctor's don't ever get better even after you DO test POSITIVE.
Fasten your seatbelt, you're in for a bumpy ride.
ALWAYS STAND YOUR GROUND AGAINST YOUR DOCTORS.
THEY WORK FOR YOU & YOU PAY THEM; they forget that.

I understand your frustration & I agree this doctor is lousy!

Your husband stating testing in the U.S. gives out positive result tests is incorrect. Most labs in the U.S. lack sensitivity & actually give out negative results. Sadly, this is why patients go from doctor to doctor being told they do not have LD. Also, if the tests do not show a RECENT infection with at least 5 postive bands, it will be deemed negative.

(Did u see the recent Avril Lavigne interview? She is Canadian, btw, if you did not know. She went to numerous doctors before Lyme was acknowledged [& no doubt handsomely paid for]).

Most doctors do not recognize LD or testing. Why? Because 1) the testing is fraught with problems & 2) doctors are facing harassment from CDC/IDSA for treating patients. It has become a politically charged topic.

I'm sorry JessicaMommy. It is a battle. We should not have to go through this. Keep on fighting.

Can he get someone to sign off on an order for an IGENEX test? It's unfortunate that we frequently have to go to a Lyme Literate doctor to get the right test. I'm sorry you're going through this.

If you can find a Lyme friendly PCP, that is ideal. However, it is not always easy to do.

My cousins daughter asked me via private msg on Facebook, about Lyme because she'd been bitten by something and it got infected at the site and then a bullseye rash. She went to the Dr who said, "Oh it's just cellulitis"! He gave her a 6day abx. She asked if she should be tested for Lyme just to be sure and the Dr. Said, "No, I'm a Dr. I know what I'm doing and you should stop using the internet to self-diagnose"!

She thinks that the teatree oil that she used before going to the Dr,will kill the infection before it gets into blood stream!

Can anyone advise ME on how to advise HER as to when to get the test? It's been 2 weeks since the bite

Happyjo : My husband did not state testing in the US gives out positive results. I think you read my post wrong or I worded it wrong. My husband ASKED the doctor if testing in the states (Igenex) is more accurate then the standard tests by run by your doctor (ELISA & Western Blot) and the doctor told him no that Igenex is a for profit company and it is Igenex's job to hand out positives!

Happyjo: We live in Canada. Sorry this might be where the confusion is when I said my husband asked about testing in the states. He was referring to testing in the states through igenex. He asked the doctor if it was more accurate to be done through there then here in Canada through any lab.

Oh, gotcha! SO frustrating.

What again bothers me is how poor ailing people go from doc to doc, searching out to find one who will help.

Yet, none of the doctors or the CDC/IDSA are held responsible.

And here we are again.

"Ignorance is Fixable... Stupid is Forever"

Doctors prefer stupidity... We can fix that by Educating Ourselves-thereby Eradicating Ignorance!

My own personal definitions...

CDC= Complicit Deeds Continually

IDSA= Ignore Doctors Stupidity Aggressively

I think that people are focused on the title of this thread... and/or may not know appropriate measures.

If you start another thread...then it will get the attention that it deserves.
