MTHFR C677T in child, vitamins recommendation?

Hi everyone! I have one copy of the C677T gene mutation and have been taking vitamins to treat it. I decided to test my kids to see if they also have the mutation. My daughter has one copy also but my son has 2 copies, homozygous for it.

Anyone who has children with the MTHFR mutation and is treating it with vitamins, can you recommend vitamin for an 11 year old that you're happy with? I'll be making an appt. with a geneticist on Monday, but would like to get something in the mean time.

Hi Inspired! I have compound heterozygous MTHFR mutations. My son, who just turned 4, also has Lyme and cos. He hasn't had genetic testing done, but we are assuming it is likely he has it. Our LLMD advised to give him 1/2 a capsule of Thorne Basic Nutrients V twice per day.

My daughter tested heterozygous for this also. I need to get myself and my son tested. Did you do the testing through their regular pediatrician/family doctor?

I learned about how to handle them from reading http://mthfr.net/

Lots of good info and what to avoid, I'd highly suggest spending some time reading there to gain knowledge about it.

My doc also put me on the thorne brand... I do know their vit D worked well for me via test results going up.

I asked my natropathic doctor at the time to test for MTHFR as I suspected lyme (couldn't convince him though) and others I knew with lyme were encouraging me to get tested for the mutation.

It's epigentic which is a newer area of research.

I have that same double mutation.

I also have COMT issues which causes high levels of methyl groups.

I didn't have the best reaction when taking 1 mg of methyl folate for the first time. Major leg cramps.

I take hydroxy b-12 (instead of methyl b-12) so that I don't add extra methyl groups to my body.

I also take a multivitamin by Doctors Research that has methylfolate in it along with methyl b-12.

However, the hydroxy b-12 dosage is 2000mcg of hydroxy b-12 to the 1000 mcg methyl b-12 and 400 mcg methylfolate. So I compensated for the methyl groups in the multivitamin through the use of hydroxy b-12 (1400mcg/2000mcg).

Ben Lynch at mthfr.net (or is it .com?) recommends this method. I also researched a bit from a site called heartfixer to find out why I was reacting to the methyl folate.

The current method I use - I have no reaction on so that is good.
