Hi All,

My Dr told me yesterday that they wanted to start me on IV Doxycycline with a midline catheter. He generally uses Rocephin, but I am allergic to Penicillin and Amoxicillin. My question is this - from what I have been able to gather, Doxycycline is caustic to the veins due to its low pH, and cannot be administered via a midline catheter. Has anyone gotten Doxy IV through a PICC and have experiences with it? Also, does a Penicilliin/Amox allergy generally rule out the use of Rocephin?

I had IV Doxy for 4 weeks (5 times per week, 200mg/day) through a PICC line. I didn't have any issues with it, except for the herxing. 15 minutes after starting the administration, my heartrate would go up, and I would feel drowsy, wanted to sleep.

They ran it through in about about 45mins, in a 100ml bag of NaCl. Faster would make me feel sick. The prescription said 30mins, but that was a tiny bit too fast for me.

Doxycycline is in the class of Tetracyclines, where Amoxicillin and Penicillin are in the Penicillin classes.

Hopefully that family of antibiotics will be tolerated...

Rocephin is in the class of cephalosporin antibiotics.

Maybe you could ask him why he wouldn't choose Rocephin?

I did 13 months IV Rocephin, then finished with 3 months of IV Doxy, 200mg once a day with 100 ML infusion ball thru same PICC. The ball took an hour, and I would start in am and infuse during commute, then S + H in office.

Girlie, he said that since I have an allergy to Penicillin and Amoxicillin, he is not comfortable treating me with Rocephin in that dosage because the two classes tend to overlap in terms of allergies

I just spoke with him again - I told him I preferred a PICC. Everything that I have read says that Doxy can wreck your veins due to it's low pH, and it needs to be through a PICC.
