panicked aunt here again.
H has been on 200 (X2) doxy since Friday. Symptoms flaring pretty badly and she is running a low grade fever -- feeling super hot/flushed. Is this a herx? I think so . . the bite was 3 weeks ago today!
We have appt. with LLMD in Buffalo on Wed am. (now Monday afternoon)
In the meanwhile, H just came back from primary doc in Toronto (who says this cannot be lyme!) but is now very worried. Primary said she should go straight to ER . . .
What do you all think? I don't want to add to H's stress, but should she go just to be careful?
They will likely run a bunch of tests, but not know about
lyme.
thanks for your thoughts!! I am so worried.

what are her symptoms
We took Billy to ER because symptoms increased. They did a Lyme test, but before results were in they gave him an IV abx. They knew it was some sort of infection.
We started Billy on IV abx on Monday. His symptoms increased until Thursday. We started him on doxy on Thursday. By Friday he was getting some relief. By Sunday he had only minor symptoms. Today, he has 2 lingering symptoms that are improving

The thing is, is if these are die off symptoms and they give her IV abx there will be more die off.
Make sure she is detoxing. Billy was doing 2-3 Epsom salt foot baths every day. Lemon water is an easy one. Lots of water.
I hope she starts to feel better soon. I know this is so hard! Really horrible.
Sorry you and your family have to go thru this. No one should.

I would go to the ER if the primary suggests it. They will run tests, likely not lyme, although you should tell them if there was a tick bite.
Go to the LLMD as scheduled. She will begin proper lyme/co testing and treatment.

thank you, team! This site is invaluable. I will report your feedback to my sister, H's mom, so they can decide what to do tonight.
H went for a burger with her boyfriend, which I think was good idea. Then home for rest and detox. But I am seriously working on her diet . . .
Your encouragement means a great deal.
I will keep you posted!

Thank you, Dancingbear,
I am so glad to hear that your son is improving. As you noted, I can't believe how quickly this thing is progressing (3 weeks since bite)
Symptoms getting scary:
headache, sore neck, hip pain, bladder issues, dental pain, terrible insomnia . . . you get the idea.
Wed. appt. can't come soon enough.

I bet her symptoms will turn around in the next day or so. It was around 5 days for Billy. Maybe tomorrow.

The other thing you have to consider is that at the ER they could very well likely give her steroids to reduce swelling and symptoms - which will really reek havoc on her healing!!
Is she detoxing enough? It really doesn't sound like it. Can you talk to her and see what all she is honestly doing to detox? Those are typical herx symptoms.
But then again, if she went out for a burger with her BF, I would say that the herx wasn't too bad.

I, too, would take her to ER—they can rule out anything else that could be a potential urgent threat… and likely won't have a clue about
lyme or symptoms or tests, etc… and that's OK.
But totally agree w/ Traveler to demand that they do not give her steroids… there's no need to do that. You can do other things to reduce inflammation (japanese knotweed—can get it from amazon.com)
And totally agree with the baths… also, call around to health food places/naturalistic pharmacies to see if you can get some Alkaseltzer Gold (has no aluminum), which is great for detox and alkalizing. You can probably also order it quickly from amazon.com.
Good luck… you moms and aunts are golden!

Thanks, everyone. H's parents decided to keep her at home and watch her temperature tonight. They thought ER would be too traumatic. I defer to them as I am just the aunt!
But thanks again for all the really helpful input. Please keep it coming!
And yes, Traveler, when I thought of what might transpire at ER, the steroids came to mind. Very bad idea with lyme!!
She was craving meat, and since I think she has already lost weight, I told her it was a great idea to go with the boyfriend for a bit. But NO BREAD, NO FRIES, Etc. I read the poor girl the riot act!
As Scarlet O'Hara would say, "Tomorrow is another day" . . .

Thanks, Traveler - that is kind.
But I have to get over the sick feeling that if I had been more on the job 10 days ago, we might not be here now.
I know that is not helpful thinking, but it is tough. I need my energy to help her move forward from here. So that is what I am trying to do.
I also have to give a presentation at work tomorrow . . .

Best of luck tomorrow!! Rest well knowing that it's only hindsight that is 20/20 - as we meet up with these issues, our brain scatters because there are no solid answers with these things. You are doing very well, especially since you have to always defer to someone (her Mom) that may not understand these things as well as you do!!!
So let go of the "if only I had"'s and realize that you are doing a very good job in a very difficult situation! Honestly.
Best of luck tomorrow!!!

How is H doing today?
Billy is almost completely recovered and I think he is about
5 days ahead of H.
I've been thinking of you and hopping for a quick recovery!

Thanks, DancingBear! That is such wonderful news about
Billy!!
Things calmed down last night for H. She texted to say she had a burst of energy during day (first time in a few weeks) -- so maybe Doxy helping?
However, she also told me that she has "stretch marks" on her legs - -which sure sounds like bartonella; also now pins and needles in hands ...
I hope for a speedy recovery, but this is sounding more complicated.
Please do keep her in your prayers if you are the praying type. Other than my dad's sudden death, this is the most stressful thing I have experienced in 48 years (and I have had lyme for 3 of them)!

Well her appointment is tomorrow so I am sure that is going to be helpful. It is so hard when new symptoms keep popping up.
The doxy is for sure helping. She will be a little better tomorrow and then in a week this will be in the past and she will be fine.
What I have learned is that doctors know how to deal with acute Lyme, meaning a new infection. It gets complicated when it is Chronic.
She is going to be fine. I hope you do not have an increase in symptoms from the stress. I know I did. All my old symptoms came rushing back last week. They have slowed now, whew!

Thank you -- here's hoping. I have to keep upbeat and calm for H and her parents (any my 81 year old mother . . )
Funny, I have been feeling a little rough -- terrible inflammation yesterday . . . I know I need to stay chilled out enough so as to avoid slipping back myself. But the stress/uncertainty is incredible -- as everyone here knows.
Shuffling off to Buffalo in the am. We will approach it like fun road trip!
Thanks again,
T.
