How to "treat" my kids?

In my mind I have decided to put both my boys (ages 8 and 11) on herbal protocol (still deciding between Buhner or Cowden)...kids both of congenital lyme. I had no idea I had lyme when pregnant - thought I was just a depressed person. Any opinions on Buhner or Cowden? I'm doing Cowden and thought that it might be easier since everything is all laid out for me...

But my real question is how to treat my kids, meaning, now that I know they have a diagnosis and now that my older son is anxious, cries at drop of hat, has very low frustration level...do I need to treat him with kid gloves? My heart breaks for him while my husbands approach is "toughen up". I also just invested $3K in hockey tuition but now I wondering...should they be playing a contact sport like hockey? Practices are later in the evenings now so we get home at 9:30pm which is late for an 11 yr old. Truth be told, its too late for me! I guess I just don't want to use this Lyme diagnosis as a crutch/excuse for everything. Two weeks ago before we got the diagnosis I would have lovingly forced my kids to "just do it" because we are not quitters and we made a commitment, etc, etc.

And should I inform the school just as a heads up? They currently don't need any accommodations but I want teachers to be on the lookout for changes. Ugh...I hate this for them. I'm strong when it comes to my own symptoms but when I think of my kids anxiety it makes me want to cry sad

I understand how you feel,i just cried this morning after bring my 5 years old daughter to LLND, she found out she has lyme and co-infection,she gave her some herble drop,maybe you can bring your kid to the LLND??
what symptoms your child has so far?

Hi there,.
You might want to look into beyond balance products for treating your kids. You have to get them through a doctor. My daughter sees at natural path here in California. The beyond balance products have really helped her.

Let them play hockey if they want. My daughter 12 does competitive soccer and Taekwondo. Think if they can exercise and it does not fatigue them, they should. 👍😚😎

Every kid is different, so it's hard to say whether the hockey practice will be too much for him or not. I think the best thing you can do is watch him and see how he does. If he can handle it, I think it's great to keep involved in something and not so focused on being sick. If he seems to be fatigued, or if his grades drop, or ..., then it would be best to let him have a break from so much activity. If you watch carefully, knowing what you are dealing with, you will see signs when his body needs to rest.

I agree with Nosila - it's up to how the child deals with it. The one thing that always kept me getting back up as a kid and young adult was horses. I was a horse trainer, and I loved, loved, loved my work!! It was rough and tumble kind of work, but had it been taken away from me, I would have had nothing to keep going for. I had to take breaks from it at times, and injuries were more common for me - but I kept going.

I would suggest you watch your son. Is he enjoying it, or does it seem to be torture to him? Get him to open up to you and discuss why it's hard on him. Maybe just talking to the coach would be enough to keep him in and keep him going.

Be understanding about his emotional turmoil, and allow him time to 'gather' himself when he's having a hard time, but he still has to learn how to function in this world. I'm a Mom that believes in teaching kids responsibility and courage, and how to push through when you need to, but learning when it's best for the body/mind to rest and heal.

And yes, I would talk to the school as well. They can be another set of eyes for you, and when things do come up, they will be more understanding with the kids rather than thinking they are being lazy or whatever.

I actually prefer Buhner's, but I would suggest that you consider Cowden's carefully. It would be a lot easier on you if you all were on the same things and the same schedule!!

My LLMD said he doesn't have experience with Beyond Balance herbs but if they have a consultant at the company that he would work to learn more. His experience is only with Cowden.

Taste will be a big factor so at least I know Cowden is something my children would tolerate. Not sure I can get them to drink as much water as is required, not could I realistically eliminate all sugar.

Traveller - can you please explain why you prefer Buhner to Cowden? Do you have a sense of the cost for the core Lyme protocol with Buhner?
And Nolisa, how is the taste of Beyond Balance and can you speak to the cost and duration?

The Beyond Balance drops don't exactly taste good, but they're not terrible, either. It's sort of a mildly bitter flavor. My son's only protests have been because of the inconvenience of taking them, not because of the flavor. :)

Most of the drops cost around $65 for a 1 ounce bottle. Depending on the dosage, I think that could last for around 1 - 2 months. I've never really tracked it, so I'm not positive about that. If you have coinfections, you would probably be on a different type of drops for each infection. My LLMD has said that some people only need to take them for a few months. My son, on the other hand, has been on them for more than a year now, taking different combinations in that time. So that will vary a lot from person to person.

One of the Mods (CD) just went from Cowden's to Buhner's, so I'll defer to her on the prices - but I will email her and ask her to post on this thread about it. :-)

And as for getting your kids to drink more water and eliminate more sugar, why not see if you can get them to use these: sweetleaf.com/stevia-water-enhancer/ It would sure be better than a lot of other things they might be drinking!!

And in order to get myself to learn to drink more water, I would make homemade lemonade, sweetened with stevia. I prefer the powder to the liquid as stevia is something like 300 times sweeter than sugar, so you only need the smallest of amounts. I used to over sweeten things all the time, which made them bitter. With the powder, I can control it much better.

And remember, small changes are best, and if they only drink one more glass of flavored water each week, that's an improvement!!!

explain to him he's going to feel worse before he feels better,
and why that's a good thing.

That he's getting rid of the bad stuff,

Also, don't make the mistake we made with my little brother,
he felt better and thought he was done,

I followed the full Cowden Lyme protocol as found on the Nutramedix site. Nutramedix sells the monthly packages for something like $285.

Cowden claims that some of the herbs in the Lyme protocol address Babesia and Bartonella. I've come to believe that an asymptomatic babesia infection has been impeding my healing from Lyme. I can't say that the Cowden protocol addressed that. I started titrating the Buhner Babesia protocol in mid-July (and am still titrating because I'm taking a bunch of stuff). I'm finally experiencing improvements.

I was able to buy all of the Cowden tinctures on Amazon for almost half what Nutramedix charges. PureFormulas.com sells them for similar prices as Amazon and they offer free shipping. (I learned about the latter source after I went off Cowden)

You may know that Nutramedix offers financial assistance for one patient per practitioner and I think you can get 6 months' worth of tinctures. There has to be true financial need.

If you only want to treat Lyme, Buhner's protcol is definitely cheaper since he only uses 3 herbs (Japanese Knotweed, Cat's Claw and Eleuthero). However, there are many other herbs he suggests to address specific symptoms and/or support specific organs.

Buhner updated his Lyme protocol recently and the details will be published in his new Lyme book due out at the end of this year. Somehow, I suspect it's more involved.

The co-infection protocols involve many more herbs. I must admit I haven't totaled the cost.

The companies he recommends for herbs charge lower prices overall for their tinctures vs. comparable sizes of Nutramedix tinctures bought through Amazon.

I saw the title of the post and thought I would pass this along. it's a link to a post that I made earlier today. It's a book about treating kids. I am not familiar with the authors so I defer to others with more experience and that's why I am including the link to the post instead of the book.

One thing is at 8 and 11 they still share things with. Mine is 16 and by this age they stop sharing.
