Broccoli intolerance???!

Hey everyone,
I've never had digestive issues at all and have never been allergic to foods/medicines/materials (though I am highly allergic to everything environmental). Well, the past three times I have eaten broccoli - even small amounts - I have ended up awake for many hours into the night with HORRIBLE stomach pain, gas, nausea, chills, diarrhea, etc. Seriously, the pain in my stomach is worse than any other stomachache I have ever had. Is it possible that I have suddenly developed an intolerance to broccoli and nothing else?? I can't think of anything else I ate or did in common those three nights -- twice I had a salad with some raw broccoli in it, and the last time I had chinese food with broccoli.
Has anyone ever heard of anything like this??

One question that comes to my mind, is it organic? The buds (flowers) on the tips of the broccoli is a great place for the pesticides they spray to get "caught". Stomach pain is a very common symptom for pesticide poisoning. I was having the same reactions to certain raw foods and when I switched to organic I was fine. Also, when you said you are allergic to "anything environmental", broccoli is basically just a flower. If you have ever grown it and been lazy about picking it when its ready, you will soon have a garden full of beautiful yellow bouquets. Could easily be an allergy as well.   D

I have the same problem with broccoli and with spinach too. I didn't know it's from lyme. I had extreme bad stomach pain, I couldn't move, I was sweating. It was like a knife in my stomach. I was suffering very much. I had to take pain killer.

I had it after eating kohlrabi last summer; I ate it, my stomach started to hurt really bad for about 5 min., then started to feel like I swallowed a balloon which is still being pumped up in my stomach.... and then I throwed up; all within 10 minutes after eating it; happened two times - first kohlrabi bought in our organic food shop, got the second one from a friend`s garden who is an aboulute biodynamic freak (garden never got in touch with any artificial furtilizer, pesticide etc.) - so I think it may be the plants or eventually even some remaining particles of stinging nettle brew which is often used to strenghen the plants.

I have developed several food aversions since diagnosis- it's like being pregnant! First aversion was fish and I was told by my LLMD that there is a neurotoxin that has a similar chemical structure to the chemical that gives the fishy odor. I have since developed aversions to Broccolli and meat. I thought it was the Mepron but I think it may be either liver stagnation from all of the drugs and/or toxin similarity....interesting. I have little appetite and mainly eat to take drugs! But it is improving a little since starting Bart treatment. I also crave crunchy foods .......wierd

I have had the exact same issue as you with the exact same symptoms. Curiously. I decided to try broccoli again after many years. Once I had no problem. The second time I went to a Chinese restaurant and ordered something with broccoli, I had the same symptoms as you. Curious that this should show up here in the Lyme disease forum. I have had Lyme disease twice. Both were supposedly cured by Doxycyline. However, I feel that I have neuropathy on my left and especially the face. Unfortunately doctors are ignorant here in Connecticut where it first originated. It's so good for business in these tough and tardy times.

Hi,

Broccoli is one of the foods that are high in oxalates. Oxalates can cause problems when sensitive to it. I have this going on with many vegetables, that's why I can't do the veggie shakes. My nutricionist explained me a lot about this, but it's been a long time...

Maybe you can have a look at oxalates?

I would avoid it, an aversion for food mostly means that it's not good for you...

omg, i have this too...
i have only thrown up broccoli once, but i cant stand the smell or taste now of broccoli , spinach, and Im having a hard time with low carb foods in general...

Sorry, I would love to refresh my memory on oxalates, cause it's really interesting, it's toxicity for some people, the different effects on one's body, etc...
But it's night time over here, need to get to bed cause that headache is killing me...
The effects of foods are really underestimated by lots of drs and healthcare professionals (tiny tiny rant - lol).

Lyme & Bartonella. Sick for about 18 years (33 now). Started treatment August 2012 with abx (ILADS protocol, different combinations) + Buhner's Core Protocol. Leaky gut, heavy metals, EBV, XMRV, erythema nodosum, Hodgkin's Lymphoma at 15, Lyme arthritis, food allergies/intolerances, histamine/chemical intolerance and much more.

Sounds pretty bad. against Lyme and Bartonella I have seen many protocols in Stephen Buhners book , "Healing Lyme." Against heavy metals, I have heard from The late Hulda Clarke that you should use L-ornithine daily to get these things out of the liver. Also, Hulda Clarke recommends five drops of DMSO on an empty stomach in the morning. when I do this, I require 30 minutes for the absorption of it. This eliminates many solvents like isopropyl alchohol which lead to cancer and disease. Please let me know I'd any of this works and I'll follow up.

If one has gallstones or poor gallbladder function, broccoli & spinach will likely provoke an attack...

I have had more and more problems with coffee too, even though according to Dr. Peter D'Adamo, it's good for my blood type. I can only support your insights here. Also I am averse now to salty foods.

Cruciferous veges like broccoli cause gas and bloating. They can also affect your thyroid in negative ways. When I eat broccoli it has to be cooked really well!

Yes like itsnotjustlyme mentioned , it has more to do with the broccoli or any other food like spinach being hard to digest than the chemical content of the food. For example apple skin will give you a similar gas and bloating feeling, like you swallowed a balloon which is still being pumped up in your stomach

Oh wow, I had to join a Lyme group to find other people with broccoli trouble! I have pinned it down to Spinosads in my case as I only buy organic, and spinsads are organic approved and natural. (Arsenic is natural too!) I found someone at the farmer's mkt who said they hadn't sprayed their broccoli with anything, and it didn't bother me. I've asked a local organic farmer, and that's what he uses, and it sure bothers me. There are probably even worse things on the conventionally grown broccoli.

This sounds like a sulfur sensitivity. This can occur with a CBS mutation and/or a decrease in Molybdenum. As for the crunchy foods, they are often high in oils which contain a lot of omega 6 fatty acids. The oils help maintain biofilms which keep you feeling better. If you don't eat them, the biofilms can start breaking down and you feel bad as you can't detox enough. Those crunchy foods also often contain foods high in arginine. Protozoans and viruses use arginine in their replication so I would be looking to see if I had viral or protozoal issues.

Other Nitrogen containing foods may cause you issues as well, caffeine for instance.
