If you are getting hives and rashes, have you considered that you are allergic to the azithromycin? I know you want to treat the bartonella and babesia, but it will only set you back to take a medication that you are allergic to.
You can be allergic to anything. The way to tell that is to stop the azithromycin and make sure to hives go away. Give your body some time to recover, then try it again. If the hives come back then you know you can't take the azithromycin.
I thought i read on here a bunch about Bartonella rash, i think? but I don't know enough about it to say if this could be herxing.
What I do know though is allergies to medication. Medication allergies that trigger hives usually occur all over the body. Mine would always start on my trunk and then it would work it's way out to the extremities. It could be a filler in the medication that you react to.
Where you are getting the hives can give you clues to what causes it. I used to get rashes anywhere I sweat. That is usually the result of your body excreting toxins through the sweat, then the skin reacts to the toxins.
You mentioned hives from the plaquenil. Many people who react to one medication often react to others. I have to make sure that i watch when I take a new medication because the list keeps growing.
You can also develop an allergy to a medication that you have taken before. The first time around your body starts to develop antibodies to the med and the next time around it provokes a response.
If it is an allergic reaction, you could continue reacting even after you stop taking the medication. Most medications take at least a month to completely leave the body. If you look up the pharmacology it usually will give you the length of time it stays in the body.
