A few months ago I came here worried about my 2-year with three bullseyes and a primary care physician that wasn't lyme literate.

Thanks to the encouragement and pushing, I found a lyme literate pediatrician in nyc that is amazing. My son did not have symptoms other than the rashes and just finished four weeks of Ceftin and azithromaxin as he developed an allergy to amoxycillin. The next step is to send blood to igenex in three months and determine if he is lyme free.

For now, I have lots of faith in the new doctor, there are no symptoms and he finished a full month of strong antibiotics.

Thanks again for the support and even if he shows symptoms later, we have the right doctor and know what to do.

I am glad to hear your son is symptpm free - you must be relieved.

Did your son get a few weeks on the Amox before he switched to Ceftin because of the allergy?
The reason I am asking is treatment when there is a bulls eye rash should be minimum 6 weeks according to the Lyme Disease Treatment Guidelines (Dr Burrascano - ILADS Board Member wrote the guidelines)

I do hope that he doesnt get symptoms - at the first sign of any - please get him back to the LLMD for more treatment.
I would have treated for a few more weeks - just to make sure.

What test is being done in three months to show he doesnt have Lyme Disease? I have not heard of any test that shows that.

I am so glad to hear he got treatment. He is so little. I love 2 yr olds. They are such fun to play with. They love learning everything. Just little sponges soaking up the world.
Can you tell I was a Nanny?

The doctor chose four weeks balancing the recommend six weeks by the LLMD guidelines versus my son's age and potential long term harm to his immune system of too many anti biotics. The doctor is fully versed on lyme and has several lyme infected patients so I trust his judgement.

He said that we will do a full blown igenex test in a couple of months. For some reason, he felt waiting to do the test was preferred.

Kudos to you for being proactive with your son's care.

The bullseye rash is diagnostic for Lyme and it takes 4-6 weeks for the body to mount an antibody response to the infection.

Running the IGenex test earlier than 4-6 wks. after the rash wouldn't necessarily provide useful information.

Getting the test done in the future will not confirm whether or not Lyme is eradicated because any antibodies produced usually stay in the system for awhile.

In fact, there is no test available to confirm that we are healed from Lyme.

Still, the prognosis for children is excellent because their immune systems are generally stronger and they usually don't have many toxins in their bodies that interfere with healing.

I'd like to add my congratulations and cautions as well.

But first the happy news!! That is so very wonderful!! Congratulations! Since I was a child that grew up with these infections, it's one of my biggest fears to deal with - other children growing up with them. Do keep an eye out for symptoms to return, as relapsing after shorter courses of treatment happen all too often. I pray that it doesn't happen for your son though!!

But I have to agree with the others about the caution on the testing. There simply is no test that will tell us if we are done with treatment yet. There is one in the works, but it's not offered by Igenex and it hasn't proven itself to be accurate yet. I'd save the money that you would spend unnecessarily at Igenex and maybe have your son do a couple of weeks or a month of a few herbal tinctures instead.

I would also encourage you to consider using preventative measures with your son, and the rest of your family as well. The herb Astragalus has been working very well for me for the last year, but whether you choose herbs or other means of prevention, I would encourage you to use something.

Yes, please do not trust these tests. THey are highly misleading, trust the symptoms and your instinct. My son and I were both treated with 1 month of antibiotics, only to get much more sick after a few years. I would also like to caution you about vaccination. My 6 year was bit last Fall and had no symptoms until December, AFTER the pediatrician gave him a 7 combo vaccine on the same day. So, watch him. Many (but unfortunately not all) LLMDs advice against vaccination on kids that had Lyme.

OTOH, you had a combo of abx and cefdin is pretty effective but also toxic, so I completely understand where your LLMD is coming from given the child's age. Just watch him. Kids are not able to always express how they feel.
