If I ask my PCP about Lyme and insist on a test, is there a way you would recommend going about doing that?
Let's put it this way: let's say you do a stock $10 ELISA test, that any medical office has, and it's positive for lyme. What's next ? Who's gonna treat you ? Unless you have found the tick 1 month ago, you will not get rid of this with the standard antibiotic regimen of 3 weeks.
Then what ? Your PCP will not give you more abx because he will not understand why, he will read the CDC lyme guidelines which say after 3 weeks of doxycicline you are as healthy as a newborn ... Still sick ? Tough luck! Must be in your head ! Must be "PTLDS" (the CDC name for chronic lyme, with the word "chronic" removed so it means we wont be treating you).
So he cannot give u more abx without risking his medical practice. Then you'll get stuck. So yes, you can try a test and even medication from your local PCP, but start to plan for going to a real LLMD if things go south, if you get a positive test and if you do the 3 week treatment and you are still ill.
Also, if your CDC standard lyme ELISA blood test ordered by the PCP, will return negative, that means you still have 70% chances to have lyme (yes the stock standard tests are THAT BAD). So it's useful only if it's positive, but if it's negative it means nothing.
Even so, CDC only tests for Borrelia. Lyme disease is caused my multiple pathogens. I have chatted with several people with lyme, both online and in person, and i have found NOBODY with just Borrelia. We all have at least 5 pathogens (most commonly 8-10) that are out of control, some of which need specific treatment. The tick is a dirty needle, it does not infect you with only one bacteria, it has dozens of species. Some are harmless to humans, some are not. If your symptoms are because of Lyme Disease, you most certainly have, besides Borrelia, the Bartonella bacteria, and/or Babesia piroplasm. They travel together. Each of these organisms need specific treatment with abx/herbs or in case of Babesia , antimalarial medication. If you tell that to your PCP he will freak out and think you are mad, besides the fact that he will not know what tests to order for you to check for these extra parasites, he will not know how to treat it. So in the end you will still need an LLMD.
