Stuart, the NHS test is the 2-tier Lyme Elisa plus confirmatory blot test at Porton Down biowarfare centre.
It is a test for antibodies and is extremely insensitive. ILADS, who are the world's experts in Lyme , believe this testing approach misses at least half of cases. It will not pick up Borrelia miyamotoi, a known virulent variety of Lyme, at all. Even if you were infected with Borrelia burgdorferi, it may not pick it up, for a whole laundry-list of reasons.
How long ago did you get bitten? If it was fairly recently, you must pull out all the stops to get treated as this is your best chance to avoid the disease becoming chronic. If it is very recent (a few weeks ago) then even the non-Lyme literate doctors will agree that the test may well be false negative, as production of antibodies is often delayed in Lyme.
