licorice root extract and rifampin

hey all,

I just picked up some solid licorice root extract by Wise Woman Herbals on the advice of my LLND Dr. C.

I started rifampin a couple weeks ago but immediately stopped because it exacerbated my adrenal issues (debilitating fatigue, headaches, dizziness, kidney pain, greenish urine). I have stayed on doxy, flagyl and plaquenil, and am still taking herbs on non-flagyl days.

I want to start rifampin again and am hoping the licorice will help. Thoughts?

Licorice is supposed to be really good for the adrenals, but it's all about how much they are compromised as to if that will be enough. The only thing I believe you can do is try it and then keep an eye on your symptoms.

Licorice root extract proven to decrease liver enzymes so make sure you have your liver tested!!

If you can get licorice mixed in with your IV I highly recommended it. It's boderline addictive if you ask me.

I don't do IV...

I've felt a bit off since starting licorice extract yesterday. When I had my cortisol tested a month ago, it was normal. I'm wondering if my problem is actually high ACTH...

Rifampin alone is extremely toxic to the human body, and when combined with the other abx is most likely doing some serious damage. Sorry to be such a downer, but I was in your position and quit - took the natural route and immediately began feeling healthier. The licorice extract, while it is a kind herb for the human body, just doesn't seem to be able to offset the effects of such a heavy duty antibiotic.

If it was me, I would stop the rifampin and use whole foods and herbs to cure the Lyme. That's what worked for me. It just takes a little time.

My LLND had me start taking a product that has licorice in it. This may be something you might be interested in looking at. I know you waited a long time to get a true diagnosis so the idea of switching gears from the treatment your LLMD has you on likely doesn't appeal.

There are many places that list Integrative Therapeutics as "sold only by providers". It's nice to be able to purchase them online versus from a doctors office.

Just a thought-if you are having the same feeling as when you were getting stung maybe try some benedryl. See if your body needs a little calming.

My LLMD scripped me Septa/Bactin in place of Rifampin. Going to pick it up tomorrow. Thoughts?

Sulfamethoxazole did me a number ....if you can tolerate it ..do you have cbs mutation (transsulfertion) brian deer has website ...but some say it works imagine its like floxed for some...
