I have really struggled with depression throughout my illness. I was initially put on antidepressants as that is what the doc decided was wrong with me and though that the 'mental health' issues where thus causing my physical symptoms, even though I protested that the physical symptoms (including an EM rash) happened first. I was given prozac, which I did terrible on...worse than I had been, so the doc decided that I needed anti psychotics to treat possible bipolar disorder. Thankfully I had started reading about
Lyme by then, so I didn't go that route. Turns out I am not bipolar, lol!
Treating the Lyme will be the ultimate solution, although I know that some people find the antidepressants very helpful in the meantime, they just didn't work for me.
I also had to sort out some detox issues, which has helped enourmously. In conjunction with L-arginine, adenso-B12 and methyl folate, to address the detox problems, I also take Tryptophan ( well, 5-HPT as astroman posted, they are slightly different -
www.progressivehealth.com/l-tryptophan-vs-5-htp-are-they-different.htm ), kudzu, and SAMe, and of course am treating both the Lyme and bart. My depression has all but disappeared most of the time, as have the other psych symptoms such as anxiety and paranoia. My sleep has improved too, which I think is a contributing factor. As is being able to detox properly.
There are a variety of treatments available, both pharmacutical and herbal, the trick is finding the one that works for you, while you fight the Lyme and co.
