Vision loss on abx?

Im about to start to take rifampin for bartonella and my doctor mentioned that sometimes inflammation of the eye can cause up to complete vision loss for some people.

This is more than mildly concerning.

How common is this? Is this one of those things that happens to one in a million people but needs to be talked about anyway, or is this something that is more common than it seems? Ive never heard of this, but apparently it was worth mentioning to me.

He said it was more common with mycobutin than rifampin.

For some reason I did not think to question further when I was at the doctors office.

Right now on clarithromycin and about to be on rifampin for positive bartonella.

On the herx - I actually haven't heard of that side effect - until now.


What dose are you going to be taking? and is it once or twice daily?


I am curious to hear what others say about the eyes.

300mg twice daily for a month or so.

That is the dose I am on.

But, why only a month? And, what is the second antibiotic that is paired with it?

hi, mycobutin does carry the risk of vision loss, but I am sure the chances are very minimal.

rifampin, however, i have not ever heard of this side effect, i did a little research and the only side effect i can find related to the eyes is blurred vision.

if you are this concerned, you can call the drug companies directly to see what they have to say about it. that's what i would do!

I believe pfizer is the manufacturer for both....

I did lose about 60-70% of my vision from houttuynia but never being on rifampin. I am bartonella blood positive.

300 mg of Rifampin ( +biaxin ) gave my extreme leg nerve pain after about 2 weeks and I couldn't walk for a while. The herx did pass.

You should know Bartonella itself also strongly damages the eyes. There are a few reports of people going completely blind from bartonella. One woman was licked by a kitten right in her eye!

I heard of uveitis for rifabutin, but not for rifampin. I tried 1200 mg daily rifampin for many months and also now I am on rifabutin 300 mg daily and likely won't exceed that dose. I have no eye issues. All my eye issues were from bartonella... Burning eyes, eye ball pain, floaters, red blood shot eyes, etc. All Bart related.

So far no eye issues except for the floaters from the damage of the bartonella.

Yes Ive heard of bartonella eye issues and that would explain a lot of mine that have occurred without any eye doctor being able to tell what they were. Started with floaters, then progressed to bright spots in the vision which I assume are breaks in the blood vessels, which sometimes do not go away and leave a dead spot.

Not to be a bugger but did you get the bright spots in your eyes checked by an eye doctor? I am not saying it is a problem but bartonella causes a lot of eye / retina issues.
