Tight muscles advice

When I herx my muscle all tighten up but they never have gone back to normal. My osteopath said that my whole chest area was so tight I couldn't even get enough oxygen in my lungs and it slightly moved my heart out of place. I have joint damage in all my large joints/spine and neck. I think that the tight muscles along with the inflammation are causing the damage. I've tried Bowen therapy, massage, PT, acupuncture, yoga, etc and nothing seems to help. Has anyone used a prescription drug for tight muscles with any relief. I have an appointment for Active Release next week but since most muscles are tight I wondered about trying a drug.

Goodness - so sorry for your suffering - I don't have any answers for you and am perplexed that all the things you have tried haven't helped. What springs to heart is adding intention/meditation/affirmations/mindfulness/visualization and asking whoever you ask within for insight and guidance. That and the question, what are you doing to detox? My MT commented to me I might benefit from cranial sacral work in that she observed that a part of my tension might be mental hanging on. When she told me some muscles didn't want to release, I focused on released, and talked to my body, told it it was safe and okay to let go. Here is to your muscles going back to normal! Have your Dr.'s ruled out other issues besides lyme that might cause the tightness when herxing? It is possible for co-morbid conditions to overlap. BEST!

You asked about a prescription drug.

I was on a muscle relaxant when my symptoms first hit me. It didn't help at all...but my issues were due to nerves...and my muscles weren't really tight.

So...it could work for you. I was warned that they are 'heavy hitters'...so be careful when taking them. I don't think you can drive after, etc...

Have you been seeing Dr. C very long?

Have you thought about trying a different LLND first?

Have you been checked out for Mast cell Activation Disorder? You're having extreme reactions...that's why I thought of the MCAD.

Thanks for the help. I need to find out more about MCAD; I definitely could have this. There is a Mastocytosis Society in Canada. I have emailed them to find out if there is a dr in my province who knows about this disorder. Do you know anyone else on this forum who deals with this?


Lyme mom X2, all of my blood tests are always normal. I do use magnesium oil since I have flares if I take magnesium orally. Thanks for the tip about where to apply it.

I'm so sorry for all the difficulties you've been having. As if just having Lyme isn't bad enough!

You really should check into MCAD - some Lyme patients develop a form of this, but testing positive is very difficult as it's not "true" MCAD for most.

The 2 members that I talk with that have these types of symptoms have gotten to the point of having anaphylaxis type symptoms randomly, usually when under some kind of stress to their body, but the body continues to grow more sensitive to stressors. So please do be aware of this. I am not trying to scare you, only to help you either determine if you have it or not (I pray that you don't!). They tell me it's as if their body not only can't tolerate the meds, but are allergic to the toxins released, so during detoxing, they can have an anaphylaxis type reaction as well.

Maybe we can just help to educate your LLMD????

So I also am dealing with mcad and Lyme right now. The doc I see actually wrote those blogs you posted. We had a hard time finding an antibiotic that would work. He was also very cautious and slammed me hard with drugs to control the mcad. Right now I am iv rocephin. At first I was herxing really badly (it's hard to tell the difference between herxing and a mcad reaction because they are kind of similar-joint pain and muscle aches/tightness). However he said if it was a mcad reaction then Benadryl would usually help with it. But I have to take the dye free liquid kind.
I was feeling a lot better for a few days. I've been on the rocephin for about two weeks now. But for some reason I'm starting to herxing again and it's frustrating. Is that normal? Does anyone know?

Catgairn - herxing will happen anytime that the toxin load gets high from the die-off.

So, a few days later...you can herx again.

I have a very, very limited understanding of MCAD with Lyme, but from what I've seen of the two others that I talk with and are most likely dealing with this, yes, this is common. It's as if you are severely allergic to both the Lyme bacteria and the toxins, so it's very hard to detox. And these reactions happen about every 2 weeks.

Maybe you could share some information about MCAD too? If so, it would be best to start a new thread - or I can start one and you can 'take it over' if you are up to it. I know there are more and more people with Lyme having these issues.

Wow, sounds like you've tried a lot.

I can tell you that if I don't stretch every bloody day, I get tight muscles. I mean 15 minutes minimum.

I wonder if what you need is some nutrient support. If you are not getting enough collagen, magnesium, glycine, omega 3's, amongst other things, this could be why your muscles are sore.

There are a million reasons they could be sore actually. An infection could be eating up your tissues because of too much inflammation, you could have high levels of heavy metals that are causing neurological problems that are not allowing your cells to communicate effectively, or you could have gut issues that are making it hard for you to absorb nutrients at different stops in your gastrointestinal tract. I think a good starting point might be to stretch every day, more than you have been, head to toe; to supplement with fish oil (nothing too crazy - fish oil is not something I like to recommend due to metals and rancidity problems, but I can't deny that it can be helpful for inflammation); and maybe try adding collagen and glycine to your diet in higher amounts. Any collagenous meats like shanks (the rough stuff that you need to cook for hours to break down the collagen) can help; a cheap and lazy option would be to supplement with gelatin. (gummy bears are great, but I'd recommend buying Great Lakes Gelatin or something of equal quality).

Just checking - you're following a low histamine diet as well, right?
