NEED LLMD IN NJ AND NEED HELP WITH EARLY LYME TREATMENT!

Just so you know, all caps like in your title is kind of hard on Neuro Lyme patients eyes - like mine.

So I would start by getting this to your friend. It's ILADS treatment guidelines. Don't forget to mention that the 200 mgs a day is from a treatment guideline that has now been removed from the National Guidelines Clearinghouse, which means they are no longer valid: www.ilads.org/lyme/treatment-guideline.php

Welcome to the forum - we have great moderators here who will be along very soon to officially welcome you and provide additional information. You're smart to have found this forum and it's good you posted - we should be able to help you and your friend. Don't hesitate to ask additional questions.

Education
First, please take the time to read the "New to lyme?" thread at the top of the page - it includes critical information when you're just starting out--everyone has a lot of questions as this is a complex journey. If your friend can read it too--all the better. A lyme & co patient must be informed--not all LLMDs are created equal so it's important to know about testing and symptomology and treatment options and all the other components of a typical protocol that are essential for healing.

Doxy
Also, it's great that your friend is on the Doxy for now (how long is her course of abx?)--will help tide her over until she can get started on a more comprehensive treatment, as you're right in that the 200mg/day is minimum amount.

LLMD
It's probably even more important that she find an LLMD to work with than be on high doses of Doxy right now (and few MDs are going to prescribe more than that anyway). An LLMD will look at her comprehensively, get some testing done that will help define the issue--get insurance coverage for further abx treatment if necessary, discover some herbal protocols that are also very supportive, and build a holistic protocol for her).

Detox
Another thing she can do right now while she's waiting to see someone is to implement a solid detox protocol. This will help her process the doxy she is on and help clean up what it is killing, but will also help prep her for future treatment. There are a lot of detox methods to choose from - you can create a new thread and ask for ideas or do a search - we discuss it a lot here.

Probiotic
Also, I'd start your friend on a probiotic --the good bacteria that the abx are killing help manage yeast/fungal overgrowth, which can happen pretty fast when the good bacteria are gone. Find a good multi-strained fresh probiotic at a health food store (usually refrigerated). Skip over the yogurt w/ bacteria advertised. Also, fermented foods are good natural probiotics.

Diet
And last--have her clean up her diet - eliminate sugars and simple carbs and processed foods for now. Won't need to do that forever but helps avoid a lot of problems the abx and the infections themselves stir up in the gut.

Ahh - OK - good to know. Looks like she's in great hands (but I'm sorry you've had to build up that knowledge...)

To help ease her stress, if she had to contract lyme, her scenario is the best of this nasty world--she got on Doxy quickly and she already has such a great source of support (you). This is sometimes the main difference between the easy cases and cars like ours. So, please give her reason to hope and believe.

We're good - just think of that as the friendly reminder is all!

And I stated that 200 mgs of Doxy a day is inadequate. 200 mgs twice a day is what's recommended immediately following a bite - although since she already has a variety of symptoms, she's looking at disseminated (stage 2) Lyme, and will need more than just Doxy most likely as the bacteria has already started to invade much of her body.

I called Dr. D's office, they won't even see a new patient until they have blood work. I explained to the staff that blood work will take too much time, time she doesn't have in the early stages and if it does come back it has a high chance of coming back positive...oh how I hate ID docs.

Thanks Piroutte- she hopefully will be able to beat this before it becomes an issue. She doesn't remember a tick bite, so she only was concerned when she started to develop symptoms. She also did not have any kind of a rash which we all know is not uncommon.


Thanks Trav- I appreciate the clarification :) The problem with finding an LLMD is getting a new appointment, they're all booked into the middle of next millenium.

Dave, did the Urgent Care center take blood ??

How did you get the doxy from them ??

Could you just take her to another Urgent Care place, tell them she just pulled a tick out ( or make up another story ) and ask for doxy



That way, you'd have a double supply

Just a thought on Blood work... Some DRs will not even order lyme test... I had to order the Western Blot test and a few other for my daughter before we got her to a LLMD... Depends on your state law... Not sure about NJ. I directly ordered the LabCorp Western Blot from walk-in labs, I had to pay (around $130.00). You can order just about any blood test out there on-line in most states. You do have to do shopping around as prices for the same test can bounce around from provider to provider. IGNEX requires a DRs order:( so that is one you can not directly order on your own. The LLMD we have now only uses the Western Blot so we did not have to redo. He did scrpt out a few additional test for co-infections and we ordered them on-line also.
