just lyme diagnosed, nine year old son swollen knee ????

my son had some knee pain three weeks ago, knee became swollen with a fever of 101 brought him to er . after tons of tests the head of pediatric infectious disease came in to tell me she did a c6 test and it was positive for lyme. The achy swollen knee was his only complaint. she started him on doxy and probiotics right away.
a few days later she told us his western blot came back with ten bands positive.
She has us coming back next week before the 30 day doxy is done. She said she may have us continue on for more months. In the mean time I have an appt with a llmd pediatrician in our area in mid May. I want to have a doctor who knows about lyme. . As of right now his knee swelling is still there, coming down very slowly. Rolls his neck around alot ,says it's a little bothersome, not sure if it's from lyme or that I have him using crutches to keep pressure off the knee for now. Has had a few nights where right before bed he spikes a temp, sometimes up to 102.4 ,after a couple hours,it breaks. I have him taking Epsom salt baths every other night, taking vitamin C and D, drinking lots of water with lemon, cut out sugar foods also. He has never had any type of knee/joint pain before. The Western Blot test is,a bit confusing ,trying to read up on it now. Anyone else never have a single symptom till swelling joints? I thought I would have seen some other symptoms before any of this??

Lyme manifests differently with everyone. You may have caught it early and he will be able to knock it out. I would continue with the LLMD. Hopefully he can stay on Doxy until then. I'm impressed that the ID doc said she may continue him with abx past the 30 days. To be safe you should treat past the end of symptoms. So if he still has symptoms, keep treating him. The LLMD will be able to guide you. Sounds like you are doing all the right things!

I'm glad you have an appointment with a LLMD. Please keep that appointment - no matter what.

You might want to add to his detoxing. Dry brushing the skin prior to the baths is good.

Also, is he taking anything for liver support? that is also important. (milk thistle extract is what a lot of us 'lymies' use.

shliv, your story sounds all too familiar to me. Our teen DS has Lyme arthritis in his knee and same symptoms as yours. It's my understanding that by the time it is causing swelling in joints it is late stage Lyme. That has been our situation which means that our DS has several co-infections that also flourished.

You have good advice here. Definitely keep the LLMD appointment. That is good your doctor is willing to allow longer antibiotics. I do know of a young child who had 2 months of IV abx and recovered quickly so far. Our DS had Lyme over a year before it was diagnosed. Hi, I'm sorry to hear that your son has Lyme, but the good thing is that he will get treatment, go to LLMD, he will know how to deal with Lyme in the best possible way. Best of luck

Update. We saw the llmd. She is testing him for co infectiins, vitamin deficiency, etc. Then will decide the best course to take. Been 6 weeks on abx .pain is not there,he's walking on it. Still puffy around knee though. I want that swelling down.

Thanks for the update. It sounds like you are on a good path.

We found it took weeks for the knee swelling to go away. Are you nervous about possible damage? DS did visit an orthopedist the second time his knee was swollen and the dr took x-rays to see if there was damage and there was none. DS continued most of the time in sports using 2 knee braces of varying strengths (medium and heavy duty). They have size small. We bought them at Walmart in the sporting goods section. The extra support seemed to help with pain/discomfort.

If you aren't keeping a symptom journal, you may want to start. We found as one symptom went away, more would pop up elsewhere (not always joint related). It seems to migrate throughout treatment.

Hope you get some more answers at your next appointment.
