There is so much info out there.....some are treating themselves and getting better.

I will depend on advice from people that have been there.....the minute you add $$ to the equation,lines get fuzzy.

Seeing an LLMD once every six weeks....get my scripts,take a look at the blood work,check supplements,ask a few questions and on my way.

The minute I sense he is overcharging me......I will find another Dr.

Heck...most of the therapies I use I found on my own anyway.

I agree it is all expensive....and I don't really see a reason in it..I mean come on..one appointment cost more than I make in a day....and sometimes 2 days....I don't care how in depth it is...300 or 500 or whatever an hour is crazy...how can someone get better who is poor..they can't...sad but true...I get they are treating something controversial etc...but still...I have only met one ND up to this point who didn't charge a lot and she seems to really care..doesn't know everything..but does seem to care.

Our LLMD does seem expensive, mostly because most of what he does isn't covered by insurance. Between my son and me, we could be making a couple of extra car payments each month. But let's not forget that the money we pay doesn't go directly into the doctors' pockets. Doctors have a lot of expense to pay, including rent, staff's salaries, and malpractice insurance. And honestly, I'd really rather not entrust my health to doctors and nurses willing to work for minimum wage. My LLMD mentioned once that he actually took a cut in pay when he quit working in a hospital to start practicing functional medicine.

Our perception is that LLMD's are more expensive because we pay for it directly and because we are paying for a superior product/service than those that our insurance will cover.

Exactly, Nosila.

If someone wants to see if their LLMD is overcharging, try calling other specialist (because that's what they are) like an ENT, or Oncologist, or Podiatrist and ask what is the charge for the first visit for someone with no insurance. I'm not talking about a clinic either, as they usually will try to help those without insurance coverage, but call a private practice, as that's what most LLMD's will work in.

Having lived much of my adult life without insurance, I know that doctors are expensive without it - very expensive. When I didn't have insurance, I simply couldn't afford to see a specialist, no matter what the reasoning.

They say you get what you pay for and after seeing other people post 300 to thousands per visits, I'm wonder what my $150 per visit is getting me lol.

But like reminder said, I'm treating my self and will see my llmd much less frequently. Different test to track my progress and that's it. I don't even need a prescription writer anymore.

Yeah health overall is a complete racquet. especially when dealing with something specialized as lyme. My doc isn't even an llmd and I still have to pay $400 per visit.

I don't want to speak for Dacarte3, however, I believe D3 meant that there are herbs and other natural remedies and treatments that can be effective without a doctor's prescription ( Samento, Buhner herbs, colloidal silver, rife machine, etc )

And dacarte3, said "anymore." So perhaps there were scripts at a certain point in time. I, for one, am only doing herbs to treat. I also agree that at a certain point (for some) you do get to where it is "status quo" and you really only need labs or other tests to monitor progress.

First I ask myself what makes a doctor literate in lyme disease? Do they explain to you the importance of detoxing, proper diet, check for heavy metals, etc.? If not then what is a person paying for? Most LLMD's give their patients scripts for antibiotics. Then if one abx is not working they change it around or add another abx.

For many here save your money, your gut (which is the majority of one's immune system), etc. and educate yourself by buying books such as Buhner's books or Dr. Jernigan's book "Beating Lyme Disease" and follow the protocol from the books. Become your own advocate for your own health as no doctor knows how to treat chronic lyme 100%. They are playing a guessing game. I would say Dr. Jernigan is the exception to the rule as he had chronic lyme and healed himself using natural methods.

I understand many are not capable of reading books so in that case there are great posts in this forum regarding herbal protocols as well as interviews one can listen to by alternative doctors. There is so much free information on the internet! :-)
