10 year old son had 3 ticks on him!!!

So my son goes on a field trip today to a farm in Chester, NJ and he's ready to take a shower so I check him for ticks and he has 3 ticks on him. One big one under his sock, a nymph on his belly and a nymph right next to his privates? How the heck did these ticks get in these particular spots as he was entirely covered up?

Couldn't save the 2 nymph ticks they were too small but the larger one is still alive and I'll be sending it to Igenex for testing.

So should I start him on 100mg Doxy 2x day for 30 days? I have plenty so I'm not waiting for a doctor visit. Anything else I can do for him to fight a potential just introduced infection?

I'm so sorry...I found a tick on my son about a month ago...it just about killed me, or so I felt when I saw it...
My son will began seeing my LLMD. We did 3 weeks of amoxicillin initially. I wish I was brave to do Buhner on my own.
I wish we didn't have to worry about this. But glad you found the ticks (at least).

Hi Rikky1, Im so sorry to hear you found those darn things on your son. Sigh. I wish ticks would just become extinct or something! Its smart that you are trying to put him on something just to be safe. I recently pulled one off myself about a week ago and I started doxy right away since doxy hits alot of the infections to *some* extent (I was already on herbs too). Doxy is not recommended for children under 8 yrs old as it can damage their teeth. As Girlie said above, I think it would be a good idea to speak to your llmd about the doxy dosage for kids regarding lyme. All regular doc's will say 100mg 2x a day for an adult but most of us here in the forum know otherwise that is only a bacteriostatic dose for lyme (meaning only stops the growth of lyme) but is not a "bactericidal dose" (meaning an effective 'killing' dose) so therefore you would need the bactericidal dosage for a child.

Def be sure to keep an eye on the area of bites for a while now to make sure no major irritation or any rashes pop up. Although, not everybody even gets the rash when contracting lyme, I would still keep an eye on the bites of course. My bite is on my right hip area and has just been pretty itchy but thats the norm after a bug bite in general. I keep putting rubbing alcohol on it.

Its awesome that your sending the tick in for testing too. There was a post a few weeks ago in this forum where theres another place that you can send ticks in for free for lyme testing....maybe if someone reads this they can post the link to the place I am referring to. (or if I find it, I will post...)

I think its so awesome they are doing this and hopefully it shows we're making some headway in the lyme community with further research being done!

It is tick season and I keep this printed out for easy access --

To prevent infection (pg. 216, Healing Lyme, Second Edition by Stephen Harrod Buhner)

In endemic areas: 1,000 mg Astragalus daily throughtout the year.

For duration of tick season: 3,000 mg Astragalus daily.

Liberal use of natural tick repellant before going outdoors.

At tick bite: Remove tick, liberally apply andropraphis tincture to bite site, cover with a moistened glob of bentonite clay, cover that with thin cotton, and leave on for twelve to twenty-four hours. (From reports, this seems to prevent active infection nearly every time.)

At tick bite: Homeopathic ledum 1M 3x daily for three days. (From reports, this also seems to work for some people.)

At appearance of rash: Homeopathic apis 30C 3x daily for three days and begin core protocol.

Dog ticks carry dangerous diseases as well, although not usually the ones that will turn a WB positive. They usually carry RMSF, Ehrlichia, Anaplasmosis, tularemia and tick paralysis. We can't test for the other strains of Lyme (no tests exist for them), so no one knows if they can carry these other strains of Lyme.

Here are a few resources to verify this. Please remember that we have European strains of Lyme in the US, so don't be fooled by things that are said, such as these only appear in ____ part of the country. These infections are everywhere.

so the principal of the school sends out this note to the parents. this shows you the ignorance of people on this subject. i'm going above him to the superintendent of the school to deal with this.

This morning Mrs. XXX was able to check all of the fourth graders’ heads for any lingering ticks. (She found none.)

She also spoke with the children and gave them a bit of tick education (i.e. if you have a bite or your parent chaperone has a bite you are not going to die and it is not your fault).

We also checked with The Farm. They were able to tell us that most of the ticks they see on the farm are dog ticks (also known as wood ticks) and they do not transmit Lyme's disease. Most of the ticks around this time of year are full-sized, meaning they are easy to find. The teeny tiny pencil-point ticks that you may hear about are nymphs (babies), and they usually hatch later in the season. Another good resource to consult is http://www.tickencounter.org/ -- it has information on various concerns as well as how to help distinguish less dangerous dog ticks/wood ticks from more dangerous deer ticks.

When it comes time to plan a field trip for fourth grade next year we will try to keep the good things about this trip in mind, and see if there is a way to minimize the “meadow”, where I suspect many kids may have picked up ticks.

Don't forget... It is recommended NOT to give Doxy to kids as it can cause permanent staining to developing adult teeth, and he is in that age where the adult teeth are still growing.

Also it's a good point that he is much smaller, I probably wouldn't go more than the 100 mg BID dosing.

Is it possible to get another antibiotic like azithromycin? Azithromycin is the preferred choice over doxy for children.

I've got an eagle eye for these stupid ticks.

Was just starting to attach. Left park to go tweezers to remove. Tick gone, and searched car, changed clothes. Took car seat, and any blankets/sweatshirts.

Asked my son if he felt anything crawling, and he said yes on his head. Took 5 minutes, but sure enough it burrowing into the head.

Removed, with body intact and sending off for treatment. Couldn't been on him more than 30 minutes, but I'm not naive. Preparing to treat kids, as LLMD believes passed onto kids through pregnancy.

Will a break EVER come? We are finding ticks constantly this year.
