Ahh haha you just made my morning.
log, you'd be surprised at how well some of these herbal protocols works.
First though, don't buy your herbs on amazon, there's a lot of cheap knock-offs on that site. Some better websites include 1stchineseherbs, montanafarmacy, monteagleherbs, woodlandessence, and even iherb for more generic stuff.
But yes, these herbals can be quite powerful. I'm like you, a straight-shooting, science-driven guy. When I first started I thought most herbs were quackery. But let me be honest, I've had my biggest herxes on herbals (sometimes in really small dosages), and I've also felt the best I have since starting treatment while on herbals. Herbals do a ton of stuff antibiotics can't do, like decreasing inflammation, fixing your immune system, decreasing cytokines, etc.
The thing to remember is that it's not one or the other when it comes to herbs and drugs. The advice I'd give is this:
If you can afford an LLMD and prescript
ion medication, get that going. It (maybe) has the best chance of healing you quickly, and without too much hassle/researching.
At the same time you start the medications, fix your diet. Sugar free, gluten free, yeast free, dairy free. It sounds tough, but it's really not too bad, and plays a huge role in decreasing inflammation and promoting healing. Even if you don't think you have food sensitivities, why risk wasting expensive pharmaceutical treatments if you're not going to at least try getting rid of potential food allergies?
Also you NEED to be on probiotics while on antibiotics, or you'll get c.diff.
Also, add in a few preliminary things for detox (like a maybe a charcoal binder to start, and some epsom salt baths)
Then, add in some herbs if you want. Doesn't have to be right away, you can wait a few months if you want to. It doesn't have to be a million herbs either. Just start low and slow. I'd add in Japanese Knotweed, Cat's Claw, and Eleuthero if you're a Buhner fan (which everyone around here seems to be).
Edit: I would avoid most herbs while on Rifampin, Biaxin, Clindamycin, Erythromycin, Tindamax, or Flagyl. These herbs are processed through the same liver enzymes that many herbs inhibit:
www.ebmconsult.com/content/pages/cytochrome-cyp-p450-enzyme-medication-herbs-substratesGo from there. Spend time on the forum, figure out what's working for people. Add in more if you want. Take out stuff if you want. Gauge how your body reacts. You're your own test subject now.
Change the antibiotics around with your LLMD after a few months to try and hit different co-infections.
Bottom line is you're not going to get to a full and amazing protocol overnight. It takes time, as you slowly learn and slowly add things in. Start with the basics, and go from there.
Heck, you might be one of those lucky people that improves quickly!
