Consulting your doctor about the right medicine you should be taking?

Hello, so recently i was diagnosed with Babesiosis. The tick bites were received 4 weeks ago. Red swelling and itching. Slight bruising as well.

Now, my doctor just prescribed me 30 days of mepron, while i finish up the last 14 days of my ceftin.

How do i go about bringing it up to my doctor that i should be taking multiple different drugs and for longer?

I've read a lot of people take zithromax with mepron for about 5 months. So i need to know how to go about doing this.

But if not, i want to seek out an LLMD within my area who will get me the right treatment, as a last resort though. I don't like trying new things, but if i have to for my health i will.

Just an update on my health, since taking the mepron i've noticed more aches and complete loss of motivation to do anything.

Are you saying you have an MD that is treating you now and that is why you want to know how to talk to him?

Who and what test diagnosed you with Babesia?

Just want to get the facts before I give an opinion.

I do have an MD that is treating me now.

I just don't think they understand how long to treat me. Because apparently from what i understand, babesiosis is not something that can be treated in a month with just mepron.

The test i had was labcorps test. I had the tick bites which looked out of ordinary, so i went and got the tick panel. Babesia was IGM positive.

So the doctor now put me on 30 days of mepron plus the rest of the ceftin i was taking, which was 30 days worth.

I doubt if your MD will treat you for the length of time needed...you can always ask.

But, If I were you, I would find a LLMD and schedule an appointment. You can always cancel it, if you find you don't need it.

LLMD's will prescribe an antibiotic to go with the Mepron...Ceftin isn't usually one of them.
Azithromycin, biaxin, even minocycline are prescribed...

How do i find an LLMD?

Thanks a lot. I'm going to talk with them when my ceftin is up.

In the meantime, am i in any sort of life or death danger from the babesia?

I'm 20 years old and i'm a smoker. Is this an issue?

To find a LLMD, you can start a new thread titled; "Looking for LLMD in/near_____" and fill in the blank.
Then members can email you with their recommendations. So, you will need to enable your email option.

Also, you can contact the ILADS Physician Referral system:

It's not good to be smoking when trying to heal from these infections.

Can you at least cut back on the amount you smoke?

If you could quit that would be better...but if it's going to stress you out...that's not good either..

I have been cutting back on smoking. I'm down to less than half a pack a day.

Is babesia life threatening?

Generally no but believe me there are worse things that can happen with these infections than dying, as strange as that sounds. Hope you never have to walk in those shoes!

​ You will want to find a well trained doctor, not one that has self proclaimed themselves as a LLMD or an ID Doc (Infectious Disease Doctor), as ID docs believe Lyme is hard to catch and easy to treat, and don't believe in the reality of chronic Lyme. Go to the ILADS site to read the new (2014) Treatment guidelines to get you started on your healing journey:

months of therapy. Relapses have occurred, and retreatment is occasionally needed."

From that article. So my doctor did prescribe me the correct amount of drugs? I assume i would fall under acute cases, since my tick bite was as recent as 4 weeks ago.

I am experiencing shortness of breath.

Should i be concerned about this?
