why is child's lyme knee swollen for three months now.

We are now at three full months now with my nine year olds knee still with puffy swollen .
Still on Doxy. going on month four now of it, dr. has added tindamax pulsing it two days on ,seven off. we will be stopping that this week , he only had a herx. from the tind. the first week.
Has anyone experienced this long term swelling? theres no pain ,that went away after the first 4-6 weeks, and he has full mobility .I don't know if this long term puffiness on the knee will damage it in any way.

He really wants to start his football next month but I'm not sure about it with that puffy knee. Anyone else have long term swelling,puffiness around joints?

Is he taking any anti-inflammatories for it?

Does a heating pad reduce it temporarily?

tried ibuprofen, didn't see a difference, then meloxicam, no difference, been trying a natural anti inflamitory called Boswellia. Still has puffiness. it's not as puffy as it was in April, first few weeks was very puffy and could not bend the knee out fully straight or back more than a few degrees . it has gone down just not completely , last two months just seems to not be fully going away . stays between a half, to a full centimeter larger than the other knee.

You might want to buy the Curcumin/boswelia combo in one supplement. Curcumin is very good for inflammation.


Also, I want to say that although I didn't have puffiness/swelling on my knee...part way through my lyme treatment - i woke up one day with a stiff leg - couldn't bend my knee.
I started using a little ultrasound machine that we have on it...and it slowly did get better.

It took several months to get completely well.

I wonder if going to a Physiotherapist and having them do ultrasound on it would help.

i had him do physical therapy twice a week for a month or so. they can't do ultrasound therapy on his knee because it's not recommended on children due to their growth plates. they did strengthening exercises with him along with ice ,tens unit, and massage. During that time he regained full mobility of his knee and they cleared him from needing any more p.t. I was reading up on the boswellia/curcumin , will try it if I can find the right dosage. it's hard everything is dosed for adults. We have a local dentist here that has a infrared sauna that they will allow me to use , I was thinking of trying that with him . Maybe the sauna will help.

Gosh, that does seem like a long time. DS has had swelling for many weeks at a time but not that long from what I recall. It flares every few months and is super crepey for long periods - misshapen etc . When in pain, he takes a break from sports and wears various knee braces. At one point they recommended he take round the clock Motrin for a week to see if that reduced swelling. Once the pain goes away, he still wear knee braces because it does stay swollen for a long time. As far as damage - none so far when he's had xrays here and there. He has always resumed sports successfully as long as his knee isn't hurting and so far so good.

I think I would consider trying the Motrin if you haven't already. We also spray magnesium spray on his knee when it's flaring. Not sure how much it helps but it's something.

My orthopedic physical therapist says ice before and after doing anything. He even wants me to ice after grocery shopping! All be darn if it doesn't help. He says I have such injuries in there that the fluid is going in there to cushion and protect that joint. He says ibuprofen when it is unbearable and I generally do that at night to get a good night's sleep. The rest of the time I use ice as he suggested. It really makes a huge difference but it is a total pain to do. I have to record cooking shows so I will just sit and ice.
