Flea/Tick prevention for Dogs

We do lots of things, LoL. A real ritual. We have 3 dogs, and I work for a rescue group. I cannot imagine EVER giving them up, despite my problems with Lyme. Admittedly, we are over the top on our "process" LoL ...

I have heard great things about Saresto (sp?) collar, though we haven't used it.

We had a dog get Lyme even though he was on Frontline so it can help kill the tick eventually. It will kill the tick, but not before tick does damage to dogs.

We use herbal collars and monthly topical from Dr. Karen Becker via Dr. Mercola's web site. It has the same effect for us as far as killing the tick on the dog.

Our playtime outside routine (and we live in the tick infested woods):
- Spray everyone living down with Wondercide
- Go out and play and have time of our lives
- come in and physically tick check dogs. they are only allowed in the mud room. don't forget pads of feet and armpits, and butt cavity!!
- Bathe dogs
- another manual tick check and brushing
- DOGS are now free to roam the house
- humans disrobe and tick check
- humans shower
- clothing is washed
- humans can now go about business in the house.

Wondercide has a stronger option, and if we find a tick on the dog, we take it off and kill the tick with the stronger spray. They are thick as thieves where we live, and Lyme is a BIG and ever increasing problem. There is never too much you can do in prevention.

For the dogs and vet visits, we also do 4dx titers every spring and fall to check heart worm and tick disease. if the 4dx shows positive, we follow up with QC6 to see if they had exposure or if active infection. Canines will be cured thankfully with abx at that point.

All the work is worth it to keep them and us as safe as possible :)

I use brewers yeast with garlic tablets and apple cider vinegar and have never had a flea or tick (and now live in FL). When I was using Frontline my dog had ticks all the time.

You can get them in any pet store or I order mine from chewy.com I also mix apple cider vinegar 50/50 with water and spray it on him

Hi there, this is my first post, but a question I can answer!

I have used K9 Advantix II for many years and it works incredibly well for ticks, fleas, and mosquitoes.

It's a topical, so it does leave a residue for a few days, but it's totally worth it when I see dead, unfed dessicated ticks on her instead of live, engorged fatties. It is a once a month, but I sometimes go longer. I live in a highly infested rural wooded area, so I need to stick with proven solutions. The primary active ingredient is Permethrin, which is a synthetic pyrethrum, which is derived from chrysanthemums.

While the topical works very well, I have also purchased a quart of Permethrin which can be mixed with water in a spray bottle, either in a very light concentration, or according to the MSDS label, for a quick doggie leg/foot spray and human shoe spray when heading outside. It also makes a good spray for dog bedding, under couch cushions, etc., especially if the Brown Dog Tick is common in your area. You can usually buy pure Permethrin in the horse or livestock section of a Tractor Supply or similar store, or it can be ordered online.

I'm not a pesticide person, but used sparingly it has really helped our tick situation. Before learning about this, about 3 years ago after having moved into this area, on any given day I was pulling 10-15 ticks off of my dog, probably saw over 60 in just a few months. I was finding them everywhere, fed and alive. There are other measures I've taken to help, but you were primarily asking about prevention for dogs.

Honestly, the problem with Frontline is the ticks have basically become immune to it. Permethrin actually kills the ticks on contact, and is better for areas where ticks are a major problem, whereas Frontline probably suits a less endemic area.

I use NexGard which is small pill that kills both ticks and fleas and HeartGard for the heartworm. I have been pleased because I live in an area with lots of ticks.
