Hi Everyone. I was diagnosed in 2012. Since then I have been treated and feel better. My lingering symptoms are slight tingling in fingers and ringing in the ears. I was able to work and continue with my life after treatment. However I have been dealing with muscle strain in my upper right back, elbow, and hand for the past 9 months. I went to physical therapy but was asked to hold off because of increased pain in my upper back and hand swelling. My doctor is suggesting cortisone injections to decrease the inflammation. Am I crazy to consider this??? The last thing I want to do is wake up the Lyme.

It's pretty clear information that cortisone lowers the immune function. All I can tell you is that if it was me, I would try everything else first.

Personally, I won't accept steroids for inflammation under any circumstances for the rest of my life, unless I'm in danger of losing my life from it, but I've been battling these infections nearly all my life, so my circumstances may be different than yours.

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I know you are right. I refuse every other injection because of my immune system so why accept this one. Truth is I was looking to end the pain from the injury. I will look for alternative methods. Absolutely nothing is worse then the Lyme hell we have had to endure.

There are a lot of alternative medicine therapies you can try. One I would encourage you to try is a "tens" unit. They now sell small ones that ad wireless in drug stores, and even my local Wal-Mart now sells them.

Try anti-inflammatories too.

Another thing, if this is a "left over" symptom from you time with Lyme disease, you may want to try Lion's mane. It's a mushroom that has been scientifically proven to help repair the myelin sheath - the protective coating that surrounds every nerve.

Yes I do take ibuprophen to ease the pain. Interesting about the tens unit !!! My doctor has been asking me to try acupuncture. Have you tried that?
This is an injury after the Lyme hell. But I have read that Lyme goes to the weakest points of the body. Possibly that is why the healing is taking so long.hmmm..
I am now waiting for an ortho appt. This swelling is an alarm that something is wrong. Muscles go in spasm and will not let go.

Yes, I have used acupuncture successfully to reduce and control pain, and I was in a LOT of pain when I started. I used a highly educated therapist that had YEARS of being in an apprenticeship, plus years in private practice that was also highly intuitive and had great results. Others that have chosen carefully usually say they also have good experience with acupuncture for pain and inflammation.

I am also of the opinion that you should try everything else before the steroids. I have horrible knees and acupuncture was extremely helpful.

But after I healed from lyme I got my knees injected with steroids and I did fine -- *knocks on wood*

It is horrible to be in pain and I so wish you luck.
