Once Lyme is in remission, how to keep it that way?

Hey guys,

I am not in remission yet, but hope to get there eventually. I am taking antibiotics (cefuroxime 2x a day) and following the core protocol of Buhner's as closely as possible. I am wondering however, once in remission what you have found that works to maintain this remission. I've read that astralagus can help with keeping a new tick bite from exposing one to another infection/coinfection, but what other herbs/drugs are people currently on now that sustain a healthy lifestyle and keep the lyme in remission? I'm guessing you don't have to be on the entire core protocol for the rest of one's life, that would seem a bit much, both effort and expense wise, but still, I would do it if that's what needed!

I'm just using astragalus at the moment, but if I get another tick attach, then I will raise the dose of astragalus and just go back on the full protocol for a few months.

The few articles I have read about people on remission tell me that taking Medical mushrooms is the way to go.
iHerbs have some different mixes of mushroom extracts and you can read testimonials by people on their site. Medical mushrooms - are cordyceps, reishi, mitake, lion's mane etc They keep your immune system in top shape. They also continue to eat properly and look after their health because its all about staying in shape to fight infections and keep them from getting a stronghold. Some of them take their old protocol every 6 months just in case.

Good question Goose,

I hope to be there one day as well. I think I will detox and take some herbs forever. My eating habits have always been the same so I'll keep that. I'll probably stick with astragalus, silver, and Immune Shield. I take AHCC too and lots of other supplements. I think all of us are willing to do whatever it takes.

Good luck. Are you close? I think I read on here that remission is being symptom free for six months, but don't quote me on that.

Huddie some say 3 months, others say 6. So I guess anywhere in between is a good place 😊. I think Buhner says 3.

Thank you! I just finished three months and definitely not in remission. I'm slow so I'll shoot for six months. I thought it was a year so I will be thrilled to be in remission at the six month mark.

By the way LOL on your 'no bad words' comment. Hee hee!

Just talked to a lady she was sick for 10 years .... treated it well... 6 years free of lyme. I personally believe that you can kill all the bugs but you have to complete the treatment not stop it once you feel better.

right on guys, im still very much in the thick of it, but for those who seem hopeless and totally discouraged, there are things that improve along the way. Ive been on antibiotics for two months now, and the core protocol + eye protocol, I have noticed a clarity that comes out every once in a while that I cannot remember since my very young childhood before I first got lyme in fourth grade 16 years ago! Also, my eyesight has improved .25 from 3.25 to 3.00 in both eyes. My eye floaters seem to be about 20% better, they have faded about 20% not 20% gone. I suppose thats how it goes. Eye pressure is down and I can open my jaw all the way without getting tension headaches for hours after.

I am not religious but very spiritual. It has got me through these years, and is why I developed spirituality. Mindfulness is important during lyme as it made me feel very numb to the world. I still have many symptoms but seeing some of them start to give way is huge.

I think we need to stay on here and help people who are in the thick of it, because who knows, tomorrow morning might be a nightmare. When we heal it is important to share or stories to give others hope.

I am crying reading your post. Literally crying. Thank you. My son just turned 14 and is currently being tested. I KNOW he has chronic lyme. He had several bites when he was seven. I took him right away but test was negative and I knew nothing about lyme until I got it. Anyway, he has had headaches, eye stuff, TMJ, sore throats, rashes, fevers, swollen knees, anxiety, mild ocd and now low level depression and he's not growing properly so has low self esteem. I only connected the dots once I stared researching for myself. Sorry for the ramble but you sharing your story that you were nine years old and now have a spiritual path, really resonated with me. I am very spiritual and couldn't get through this without it. You sound very compassionate, wise, and like a natural healer. I hope my son walks this journey with a similar sense of grace.

I'm so happy to read all that is going well and getting better for you. Keep us posted. You are right one persons post can really help another. Thank you.

I had no symptoms in March 2016 and I quit buhner's protocol June 27, 2016. Through the summer I was traipsing through the woods to get to our lake so I did take astragalus. I am not taking it now but will come next spring when I go back outside among the grasses, bushes, etc.

Now I take daily --
Multiple,
Mushroom complex
Extra Vit C
Lutein
Glucosamine Chondroitin
Quercetin
Fo-Ti
Cinnamon
CoQ10
Ginkgo

I eat extremely healthy and detox has been a way of life for me way before lyme so I continue to do that.

Get it out of every cell..including white blood cells ..no amoumt of immune boosting can kill the spirochete ..it can infect and destroy neutophils ,esonphils b cells t cells and rbc ...

a friend has treated for 6 yrs..and still uses bvt to maintain stings once a week ...i need a miracle

I think remission is pretty much esclusive of individual genetics and type of BB. The more i read Buhner book on it the more I am convinced.

Khawdash, I do astragalus for tick season. I am healed/remission. We just had our first snow storm, so I won't be hiking through the woods.

What determines chronic lyme? I had it for 13 months? Is that chronic? What is the timeline for chronic? I never did figure that one out.

But, I did take astragalus the entire time I was in treatment. I have no idea if it worked or not.

I also neglected to mention that I do kombucha, saurekraut and if I forget one of those I do a probiotic pill. Everything in our home is organic and quite expensive. Nothing has words in it we cannot pronounce, no packaged foods, very little white stuff (pasta, bread), very little corn because so much of it is GMO, we eat out very cautiously - never fast food and only quality restaurants. We are fortunate to live in an area that is very hip to organic and whole foods in the restaurants. But we both love my cooking. However, I tire since I have been doing it for so very many years.

Chronic is when it's not caught early...and you don't get it treated right away.
Generally,(not always) if caught early...treatment isn't as complicated as if it's an older infection and has disseminated.

PeteZa - 13 months is how long you treated, right (vs how long you had it before starting treatment?)

Like PeteZa I continue to detox and eat healthy. I also do liver/gallbladder cleanses about once every 6 months, do coffee enemas (yeah sounds yucky!). The only supplement I take (drink) is Green Vibrance.

I also pay attention to my stress levels as stress can cause a person to relapse and I don't want that to happen to me!!

According to herbalists and Buhner, Astralagus shoud only be used when a person has never had Lyme or is in remission (full remission) - yes that is possible. If used in an active chronic or acute state of Lyme Astralagus is said to worsen symtoms of Lyme and should not be used.

I feel like the overall consensus is to keep your immune system as healthy as possible to keep the spirochetes at bay once in remission. Some people may have chronic lyme and not notice it all the time, or not at all due to having a superior immune system, but my guess is, when they age, or are weakened by stress, fatigue, other sickness, the symptoms start to develop and can get worse.

Seemingly, we must remeber how awful Lyme is (was) and use that as fuel to live healthy even when we are feeling good.

I was bit and then 5 months later I took astragalus and had no problems at all. I continued astragalus until I was healed/remission.

Girlie, 13 months is how long between being bit and healed. I spent about 2 months without anything in the beginning - I had no symptoms.

Oh and I forgot to add to my daily intake collagen. I will probably continue this the rest of my life. I love how my hair, nails and skin are doing on it. So hopefully my innards are liking it too.

Maintenance and protection are very important! Now if the rest of us will only get to that point, right? Hah!
