What?! Cats don't get Lyme disease?? My barn cat was diagnosed with Bart And Lyme just recently! There is a heck of a lot better testing for animals than for people- always has been.
Hi needhelp4,
Bartonellosis:
It is my understanding that cats are the preferred reservoir hosts for Bartonellosis and that we can exhibit a wide variety of clinical syndromes, including most commonly, cat scratch disease.
It is also my understanding that cats usually remain asymptomatic and are seropositive depending on the geographical area.
I have read that cats with fleas are particularly at risk.
Apparently, most cases spontaneously resolve over a period of time.
In severe cases, gentamicin, doxycycline, erythromycin and azithromycin are often among the drugs of choice for treatment.
It is thought, and I have always been led to believe, that fleas can transmit the infection to us. I've also heard that a cat bite or scratch can also lead to infection.
Lyme Borreliosis:
Your cat being diagnosed with Lyme has come as a complete shock to me. I am so appreciative that you shared this with us. I was always of the understanding that cats were not susceptible to Lyme disease. This is such a game changer for me. I may be shocked but I am not surprised. I recall a few years ago where a man had heartworm. There are exceptions to every rule. And now I find out that exceptions in regards to Lyme apply to cats. I wonder how rare it is.
I agree with you about
testing for animals versus testing for humans. I'm going to ask my vet about
this next time I see him. He has always stated that as far as Lyme is concerned, there is no worry in regards to cats.
Needhelp4, Do you know how common Lyme in cats is in your area? What type of test was performed? Was it an in-house test or were the samples sent to an outside lab.
Wow! What prompted you to seek out testing your cat? Did your veterinarian present you with a treatment plan?
Your poor cat. I hope that all goes well.
Can a cat with Lyme transmit the infection to us?
Oh my. My head is swirling with this new information.
I am looking forward to learning more about
this.
