is my sons Lyme coming back ??????

I posted here over the summer. My nine year old was treated from April to August for Lyme arthritis.
The last few months he also received tindamax to get any cysts.
A couple of times through treatment he would say that in his one knee and once or twice in the chest area he would get what he desribed as a "bee sting like zap".
Now he tells me for the last few weeks hes gotten these "zaps" again in the same areas as before. This last month he has had a chest/head cold that we all have right now and last week he and his brother had the vomit bug for a day.
Im wondering if these zaps hes getting is Lyme coming back?
Is it due to his immune system right now is fighting off his cold?
Do you go back on antibiotics when this happens?
Or is this just a lingering symptom that will occur now and then?
I created a chart yesterday for him to mark if he feels anything. daily. Trying to see how much this is happening.
He had nothing for three months now this.

How long was he treated once his symptoms resolved? The standard is to treat for two months past the resolution of symptoms for adults, and I think it's one month for kids.

it was about two months after the knee issues went away that we stopped. Llmd had him on doxy and pulsed with tindamx weekly till no symptoms

It sure sounds like it could be related to Lyme. I would probably take him back to the LLMD, just to make sure. You're doing the right thing by asking now because if it is still Lyme, the sooner you address it, the better.

Treating for 4 months is sure a short time. But it is so very hard to say if it is coming back of just a flare that supposedly someone healed of lyme will get.

Darryl Hall (oh Hall and Oates) says he gets annual flares and goes on treatment for a bit. Other than that I have no expertise in this.

I agree with Nosila and think you should contact the llmd and see what they say.

How long did your son have symptoms before he was treated?

My son had his knee swell up in a weeks time back at the beginning of April . We brought him to er and from there they immediately ran tons of tests including Lyme tests. Came back positive and they started doxy right away.They got right on it. We had not seen any other symptoms. He had some herxing the first week. Found a llmd pediatrician right near us who studied under Dr. Charles ray Jones. She continued on with doxy and cyst busters along with probiotics and vitamins.

Update. My sons llmd said to watch him and see if his symptom of the "zaps" goes away after his Cold is gone.
We did end up at the pediatricians on Saturday because his cold got worse , Dr said he looked like it was going into a sinus infection so he was put on augmenton for it. Started finally feeling better Tuesday. Doing better each day , so the Cold is going away. The llmd said they see that when kids get sick after having Lyme that the viruses can hit them harder.

Augmentin can also kill some lyme bacteria.

shliv, that is great you are following up with your son. Lyme arthritis usually means the person is late stage so 4 months seems like a short amount of time for abx. Also, late stage Lyme means that there's been time for co-infections to get a hold in the body. Has your DS been tested or checked out for those too?

DS had 2 bouts of a swollen knee and many other symptoms before at my insistence he was tested. He not only had CDC positive Lyme but at least 3 other co-infections. We are now completing 1 full year of antibiotic (pulsed) treatment for all 4 and still have more to go.

Keep at it and continue to listen to your mother's intuition.

He was tested for co infections by the llmd, came back negative. The first time he had pain and swelling in his one knee he was tested right away for Lyme so we were fortunate to have found it quicklyand not go through years of trying to find out the cause and being diagnosed incorrectly like others I have read about.

Please keep us posted. Hopefully it is just a flareup from his immune system fighting again.

That said, if he's chronic, four months of abx may not have been enough.

My son was just diagnosed in November and is chronic. Knee swellings were his first symptom.

I get such good advice and support from this board.

Please keep us posted. I hope for you both that it is just a quick flareup.

Update. My son cleared up his sinus infection and his pain zaps ,as he calls them , went away. Now three days ago he came down with the stomach bug for 24hrs, its going through his school like crazy right now.
So same day he had the bug he gets one "zap" of pain shoot through his knee that had the lyme arthritis in it last spring.
I have made an appointment with his pediatric llmd to go over this.
Just found out our health ins. provider is chaging jan 1 and now his LLMD wont be in our covered network, so next year we will unfortunately have to pay outof pocket to see her.
Not to happy about this , but we will make it work.

I'm so sorry about the insurance situation. They are making it hard on Lyme patients every time I turn around it seems.

I'm glad you're committed to doing what is necessary to keep your son healthy! I hope that with a bit of immune boosting, your son will be able to deal with these viruses that are always going around schools. Just too many bodies in one place for that to not happen. LOL!
