mycoplasma pneumonia - my 9 year old son

Hi everyone,
I could use your help. My 9 year old son had strep throat in March. He was treated with abx. A few weeks later I noticed him clearing his throat very often. Took him back to pediatrician. Pediatrician suggested an allergy or it being habitual. I tried Claritin. The clearning of the throat did not go away. In May my son was bit by a tick. I had it tested and it came back negative for Lyme. They tested a few co-infections and those came back negative as well. I had my pediatrician put my son on zithromax for 3 weeks just to make sure.
In September I noticed my son with a tic. He nods his head, sometimes shrugs his shoulders, touches his face. He does mostly the nodding of his head. He shakes his head up and down all day long...it is hard to watch. I was told to leave him alone, but as his mommy, I can't.
A dr who specialized in PANDAS (we have an appt next week) told my pediatrician to check his blood. It came back positive for mycoplasma pneumonia...IGM 1281. He has no symptoms of an pneumonia right now. Just the clearing of his throat. He did have a walking pneumonia back in September. They also tested his blood through Quest for Lyme. It came back with the 41 band Reactive IGG. 41 IGM was nonreactive.
So I guess my question is what is mycoplasma pneumonia? Can it cause him to clear his throat and have a tic?
Does he have PANDAS or LYME? Thank you for your help!!

Dans - I would find a Pediatric LL Dr. - one who knows how to diagnose and treat PANDAS.

Quest isn't a good lab for testing tick-borne diseases.
You could do an Igenex test for lyme ($210) - and see what it shows.

I am not knowledgeable about mycoplasma - but this will bump the thread so others can comment.

Your question: PANDAS or LYME? -

Lyme can cause the PANDAS symptoms...and since he was bit by a tick..that may be what has caused the tics he has.


You are doing the right thing - to question this...Good for you momma!

Firstly - I am so sorry for the worry and concern and fear and frustration you must be feeling in relation to your son. If it were my son, I would not rule out lyme, if he had tick bites. Blood tests are not reliable, at all. Lyme is a clinical diagnosis. With regards to band 41 - I like this link for explaining it. lymemd.blogspot.com/2008/09/all-i-got-was-41band.html
I agree with Girlie, find a pediatric that is lyme literate and knows PANDAS.
I like this screening tool. Perhaps you could fill it out for your son. It was developed by a man that has treated thousands of lyme patients. His book, also, I found a worthy investment in that he has a schematic that considers all possibilities given symptoms.

Thank you for responding. I spoke to my Llmd and he gave me a few pediatric Llmd'S in my area to contact. My dr also said that PANDA and Lyme are treated the same. I can't believe this is actually happening. I am finally getting better and now I am dealing with this with my son. So frustrating! Ahhh

Sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

I think PANDA is a constellation of symptoms...from Lyme.

I'm so sorry you and your little guy are going through this. Truly I am. I'm happy you caught it quickly. You're a good mom!

My son had two ticks on him at seven years old. One inside his ear, one behind his ear (I remember it like yesterday). I had him and the ticks test. All negative. I was relieved and life went on. A year later tics presented: eye-rolling, elbow touching, throat clearing. There were more. One would go away and a new one would crop up. He started seeming spacey. School suggested a full education/psych. evaluation and told us they thought he had ADD. We did eval. Showed super high IQ and no ADD. This is not a brag - what was in the eval and who my son was were not adding up. He had trouble reading (slow), no stamina, etc... We just thought he was immature. This went on, his grades were always good but school took a lot out of him. He was overwhelmed easily and seemed to be getting stressed as he got older. He's was a soccer and lacrosse player and in 8th grade didn't want to do them any longer -his knees consistently hurt so we took him to best sports medicine surgeon. He has been a competitive skier since he was four - so figured tendonitis from skiing. He also wasn't growing and looks 11-12 so we have been dealing with ped. endocrinologist. In Sept. he changed high schools for less stress. He's now 14. I got bit in July (but was really reinfected) and by learning about Lyme I realized my son has had lyme all this time! I asked so many doctors "Could this be Lyme?" They all dismissed me. Not backwoods doctors, the very best specialists in Manhattan. Doctors do not understand Lyme.

Sorry this is so long and not trying to hijack. I just don't want anyone to tell you your son has ADD, etc... neuro lyme mimics ADD, ODD, anxiety, Tourette's, bi-polar, depression, etc... It can impact growth and every bodily system.

Not trying to scare you just want you to know what it can do if left unchecked. The good news is kids usually heal so much faster than adults. I have no doubt my son will make a full recovery - but boy is life a little hard for him right now. There are other parents on here with kids who have lyme and they have really helped.

This board has been a Godsend for me and my son.

Thank you so much for reaching out to me. I am sorry that you are going through this as well. I have neuro Lyme myself. I was diagnosed in June. I myself sometimes feel like I have ADD. I get foggy, sometimes tremors and my head gets this pressure sensation that is so hard to explain. I also clench my teeth. I am feeling so much better, but still have ways to go. I cannot imagine a child going through the same symptoms as me. I don't even know if a child would be able to explain how they are feeling. I myself find it difficult to put into words. I find it so frustrating that doctors do not understand Lyme. My son seems to only have a couple of symptoms...I hope I caught it early.

I had similar symptoms and so does my son (clenching, tremors, etc...) mine was mostly from Doxcy. A lot of them go away so please know you can heal and try not to worry too much (impossible!).
