So I believe I've pinpointed raw milk as something that significantly flares my symptoms. I noticed that whenever I am drinking it, my fatigue and fogginess skyrocket, and also sometimes that "flu-like feeling" in my muscles resurges. While otherwise I have improved quite a bit with antibiotics, the raw milk really gets me down physically.

I am uncertain and confused, however, if this is to be interpreted as a "good" (i.e. helping me herx) or "bad".

I have no reaction to other dairy products – cheese, yogurt, butter. I haven't drunk pasteurized milk since getting Lyme, so can't compare with that.

On the other hand, the raw milk definitely seems to have a positive effect on my digestion. There is a positive difference in the bathroom that the raw milk seems to counteract the negative effects on the gut of the abx.

This effect was both when I was on doxy last month, and plaquenil this month. I also take probiotics.

I did post about this before, but I am re-posting because at this point I am quite certain of the linkage. I've asked my doctor but want to ask all of you. And I need to decide once and for all: raw milk or no?

I have also started making cow milk kefir but am afraid of it having the same effect...

Advice? Help!!

Hey Brendoni,

Kefir sounds like a great idea for you. Although I'm not sure the implications of making it with raw milk, I've only ever used pasturized. I'm wondering if the fat content of raw milk may have something to do with it, or maybe it comes with another bug that upsets your stomach? Sorry I don't know much about it.

But like i said I would recommend the kefir as the cultures may overcome some of the possible others that are joining along in that ride, causing you discomfort or pain. Have you tried pasturized milk since you started treatment?

Also keep in mind that if taken too close to doxy you may be having a bad reaction because of the calcium content.

If you figure anything out let us know as I know there is a cult of kefir addicts around here.

What kind of reaction?

I know that taking calcium with doxy can reduce the amount of doxy that is absorbed.

I had very severe intestinal cramps when mixing the two before I knew I couldn't. I wouldn't get the nausea though. I drew the conclusion after I complained to my LLND about the pain, and stopping the two together has helped. Don't know if that's a thing, just my experience.

The thing I'm confused about is what exactly from the raw milk could be causing these flare-ups?

Is it the good bacteria from the raw milk that is making me super herx (much more than any reaction from abx)? Is it the lactose that feeds my Lyme bacteria? Or the fat like Asmoline mentioned affecting my gut? Are there other theories?

I read in another thread one person mentioning she had very bad reactions to raw milk, but haven't seen anything else...

Yes, there is good bacteria in raw milk. No, milk of any kind should not bring on a 'super herx'. Even the best raw milk would help your digestion, thus improving the whole body, but would not bring on a more serious herx.

I used to only use raw goat's milk - but my health declined again when my adrenals crashed and had to get rid of my goats. =(

But I made raw milk kefir, raw milk cheese, raw milk anything-I-could-find! LOL!

Now, there can be a huge difference in reactions to raw goat's milk and raw cow's milk in some people. I can't tolerate cow's milk, but I do fine on goat's milk because it's easier to digest.

Some people with a casien (milk protein) allergy can't tolerate any milk product - and the more severe the allergy, the worse the symptoms will be. Those with a lactose intolerance, *should* be able to tolerate goat's milk, but some still can't.

Once it's fermented though (as in kefir or some cheeses), I can tolerate even cow's milk, so I use cow's milk for my kefir, but I'm heavily biased, as the raw goat milk kefir definitely was easier on my digestive system.
