Unknown diagnosis

I have had 5 periapical dental abcesses in the past 12 months. The dentists and oral surgeons have no explanations for these because I have no decay or cavities, the teeth are fine. They keep telling me it is not a teeth issue, but I go to my PCP and all my blood work comes back fine. I got the Western Blot test and was tested for Lyme's and it came back negative, except one oral surgeon specialist suggested a possible co-infection from Lyme's was causing my teeth issues. I am going to get more extensive testing done for lyme's but I have other weird symptoms where if I eat any dairy, wheat, gluten, or excess of sugar it seems to make the teeth worse and flare up and a tooth will slowly become infected. I have been on several antibiotics each time for the tooth and it does not kill the infection, they always have to pull them. Also, I keep getting bronchitis and an infection in my chest in between the dental infections.

I am a healthy 32 year old and only started having these symptoms off and on for several years, but I do not smoke, drink, and exercise at least 3 days a week. I went to a holistic dentist who told me I have a fungal infection in my jaw bone, but I had Cat Scans and an MRI done and it shows no infection in my jaw bone, the scan and MRI showed nothing wrong. My blood work comes back fine except for my EOS count is always high about 14. My thyroid, Vitamin D is excellent is fine, so no diabetes or anything like that. Though sometimes my whole body feels very irritated like bugs crawling under my skin at times, and my left side in the past year has gotten weaker then my right and my left arm twitches sometimes. Also my left leg kicks out when I walk sometimes, my friends notice it. Not sure if anyone has any idea what this could possibly be.

Also, my ENT doctor said sinuses are clear and there are no issues with my sinuses. Also, I am on a strict diet to rid myself of candida as the holistic dentists said I had candida, but I got a fungal test and it showed normal amounts of candida. I also get joint pain, but was tested for Rheumatoid and my numbers were fine.

Any help would be appreciated and if you have any suggestions, please let me know. Thank you!

Welcome to our community. I'm glad you found us.

Unfortunately, much of what Psilo has said is true, and I'm not sure we can be of much help - but we can try.

First, what was your Western Blot results? Often they come back overall negative, but there may be hints as to if you have Lyme in the individual bands that are reported.

Also, do be sure that you are not living in a mold situation - a house with a type of mold that can infect people. Most with this issue, have a gene mutation that makes them more susceptible to it. You can have a gene mutation test done to see if you have that gene. I don't know much about it (not one of my personal issues), but I do know that you can start with the MTHFR testing.

I know you said you have seen a Holistic Dentist, but have you tried a Biological dentist? It might be just enough difference in the two for the latter one to be of help.

If you have systemic Candida, there is a wonderful, detailed post on page 2 of our "New to Lyme?" thread that sits at the top of the forum by a member named Pirouette that will be very helpful. Stay on the Candida diet until you can rule it out though.

Hopefully, as others see this, they will have suggestions as well, or someone that has had this issue will recognize it and be able to help.

Thank you for responding back to me.

Psilociraptor-I actually have been on the candida diet for a year, and sometimes fail and eat ketchup and potatoes,chips, dairy rarely, but have been consistent with just a meat/fish/vegetable diet and now I am eating fruits which I know I probably shouldn't be and have been taken Pau de Arco and other Candida diet supplements everyday several times a day for about a year now. AND the weird thing with that is that I crave sugar and think all the time that I cannot wait until I am done with this diet so I can binge on candy bars cookies etc, though I do not and have never had any weight issues ever, I am a healthy BMI. But the craving sugar, I know I have candida, but is that enough to access/infect my teeth as I have researched this a lot and found nothing, but it is weird how I get very ill and achy all over and teeth throb when I eat bread or anything sugary. Though they tested for celiac's and that came back negative.

Yeah, most doctors are not very helpful and will not refer me to infectious disease or test me to extensively because they don't deal with teeth and see nothing wrong, but the dentists tell me it is not a teeth issue.

Traveler-Thank you for your response. I have tried a biological dentist and had hair/blood and metal testing and all came back fine EXCEPT my EOS which is usually high of a 14 or 13 and my MPV is a 9

My Lyme results were as follows in order (not sure if you can understand it as they were in a long line listed and the word nonreactive next to each number):
18, 23, 28, 30, 39, 41, 45, 58, 66, 93

and then my CCp, Antibody was <16. Thanks for your help!

Have you ever considered a rx yeasts remedy? I may have missed it, but were you tested? Also note that there are more yeasts species than just Candida albicans.

Have they tried just straight up biopsying the abscess? Thats perplexing man i'm sorry. It could be candida, but it could also be secondary. It seems odd that it would be so hard to get rid of candida alone. Then there is the possibility of airborne molds. I don't know if that's something that might be an issue for you. No amount of antimicrobials will work if you just breath in what you kill right after. But periodontal abscesses are by no means a typical symptom.

Just an FYI - that is a lab that often doesn't produce good results. Many false negatives.

If you do want to retest - do a WB from Igenex Lab - IgM and IgG costs $210 total.
Results in 3 weeks. They, too can produce false negatives...but your chances are better with this lab.

One of the reasons we don't test positive is because the WB relies on our bodies producing antibodies to the Bb...and when we have Lyme disease it suppresses our immune system...so we can't mount a response and produce antibodies.

If you do test positive for lyme...or even lyme specific bands...then it's likely that you also have one or more co-infections...

Just wanted to mention what helped me in a sort-of similar situation.

I had a really bad infection from a tooth when my Lyme was getting bad. I finally got sick of the dentists trying to save it and told them to pull it and then the infection resolved, but while I was dealing with it what helped me a lot was using a neti pot 1-4 times a day. (Always use sterile water and pharmaceutical grade salt.)

It didn't reverse the infection but it made it less painful.

I failed to mention, all of these teeth that were pulled these past 12 months were ALL root canaled teeth. Sorry I did not mention that earlier.
OldSalty-This is what the oral surgeons (plural because I have seen several since they all give me the same run around that they cannot biopsy it and do not have an explanation to what is causing the infections) tell me that there is nothing to biopsy and the lab will just tell them that it is just an infection from the tooth. I had pleaded with these oral surgeons to biopsy it and get nowhere. It is beyond frustrating. And then, some of the infections do not show on the x-rays. So the last 3 had no abcess show on an x-ray, until I again pleaded with surgeon to pull the tooth I was in pain and then they see the tooth is infected once they pull it and they believe me.

Infections can travel between teeth - I've experienced this first hand. One imperfectly cleaned root canal can leave residue that provides a culture for transmission. If this is the case with you, you are lucky that it didn't make it to your brain. That can be lights out.

Well the root canal certainly changes things... Ugh i had a bad tooth since prior to lyme i never got dealt with. Wonder how much that's contributing to my illness. I don't even know what to do with it because i'm afraid to make matters worse

Pleased to make your acquaintance. What you are going through sounds hauntingly familiar to me.

One thing that has helped me immensely from developing further infection in the jawbone where I have posts implanted into my jaw where an implant used to rest, was use of Xylitol. This did reverse the infection.

Xylitol is a fighter against candida as well as harmful mouth bacteria.

If you wish to try what I did, Start slowly from 1/4 tsp in tea twice daily and increase by 1/4 tsp the next day until you are able to tolerate a tsp once or twice daily.

Side effects include heartburn and mild diarrhea if too much is taken before a tolerance is built up.

Use at the first indication of infection. I imagine rinsing with this would be a second (possibly less effective) option. Those with root canals I would definitely consider use of Xylitol.

My last four remaining natural teeth decayed in an unusual manner, rotting from the inside outward (before rediscovery and use of Xylitol). Did your infected tooth that you had removed present in this way?

Also to 1000Daisies, I empathize with your difficulty in getting the medical world to take your symptoms of systemic yeast seriously. I experienced the same to such an extent that I began to self treat.

12 root canals and 12 infected teeth that needed to get pulled-yikes I feel for you. Root canals are dangerous-see artciles at Dr. Mercolas site.
Next time anyone opens you up get a dna test of the infection from dental dna. All jaw infections will have many microbes and this will help zero in how to treat.

Find a good biological dds- I like the one in Mesa-Arizona-Dr. M. He is a very straight talker.

Infection often doesn't show up with mri or cat scan-two minutes with google and you can find that fact. Cavitat ultra sound-EAV and frankly knowing your own body works better.

PS don't work with a dds who does root canals-doesn't do dna test on infection and doesn't test dental materials before they place them in your jaw 24-7-365 forever. They can be the source of bad health
