Hi has anyone taken amoxicillian for treatment and does it work?

doc has me on 2 weeks of it and I`m having some side effects trouble staying a sleep and dizzeniess and vertigo

I heard antibiotics don~ t work unless used right away

I believe I have had lyme for a long period of time

I have had ra for 20yrs

anyway taking these antibiotics is interfearing with my ra treatment

causing me to flare because I have to hold off on my biologics

anyone have any info? ty hugs

I was on Amoxy (with Probenecid) for a few months , but I tolerated it well. Because of its very short half life, I was prescribed Probenecid with it - this is an old gout med - it keeps the levels of amoxy in the blood higher for a longer time. I was also on. 3x daily dosing.

Yes antibiotics can work for chronic Lyme. It sounds to me like you are herxing on the amoxy. This is because the bacteria die/off has flooded your body with toxins resulting in an increase of symptoms and/or new symptoms.
It is crucial that you detox to help your body reduce the toxin load.

But, there are herbal protocols for those who don't want or can't tolerate the abx.

Lyme can cause autoimmune reactions in the body.

Are you seeing a Lyme Literate Dr? If not , I suggest you do.

Debrose, taking one abx alone whether short term or long term isn't going to help someone with long term infection.

Have you considered trying alternative methods? Herbal protocol is popular, dosages can be controlled to minimize herxing and herbs may even help minimize your RA symptoms, as some are meant to reduce inflammations.

You may have to check everything against contraindications with your RA meds, which is easily enough accomplished.

If you have heard of Stephen Buhner's "Healing Lyme" books, he has a second edition out that is excellent.

If he isn't a Lyme Literate ID - you probably won't get satisfaction out of the appointment.
You need someone Lyme Literate...otherwise the Dr. will most likely not recognize you have lyme disease...and even if he does..he will think that all you need is a few weeks of antibiotics....(following IDSA guidelines) and what symptoms are left-over are PTLD syndrome..

I have to agree with Girlie. You really need to find a LLMD (Lyme-Literate Doctor). Almost all infectious disease specialists follow IDSA treatment protocol, which will not work with chronic Lyme.

Agree with Girlie and agree with mm. If you are going to work with a Dr., see someone who is lyme-literate! IDD, well, from personal experience and reading other's stories - they aren't always that helpful.

Arthritis =inflammation of the joints ...what pathogen is causing the inflammation .?..please stop any biologics or steroids as the reduce the immune response and allow pathogen to flourish(ask your rhuemy for minocycline or doxy and see if the pain goes away ...) ...a regular id doc will not accuratly test for mycoplasma bartonella or borrelia the likely culprits of your pain ..please consider dna connexions test ,no doc needed ...
also consider bee venom therapy ...my lyme induced arthritis is significantly better ..
my friend got rid of their ra after 2 years of treatment . .

ty you all can`t stop steroids been on them to long...

they have been trying to wean me off them

that is I`m on biologics..

my RA is bad been dealing with it for 20yrs

prob have had lyme that long too..if not longer...

the first lyme desease test I was ever given was recent because of my bad ra flares..

sigh RA is terrible painful..

IF you can get in to see a very knowledgeable, highly experienced LLMD, they can help you wean off the steroids slowly, so as to not make things worse. That's if your RA and Lyme are not separate issues. It's possible that you will need to stay on the RA meds if they are separate issues, but that would take a really good LLMD to balance those two things out successfully.

Lyme can help create autoimmune issues, so depending on how long you have been infected, treating the Lyme may eliminate the RA, but at the very least, it should lower your RA symptoms, as Lyme treatment will remove at least one condition that is attacking your joints.

Many Lyme patients are using LDI or LDA to help them deal with Lyme and autoimmune issues, and may be something for you to look into as well to see if it's right for you.

Autoimmune diseases are caused by pathogens. Whether the RA is directly caused by borrelia the two are interlinked either by cause and effect or coinfection. They are NOT separate issues. Biologic drugs are always a bad choice if real health is what you're going for. As others have mentioned the flare may be a herxheimer which would be a positive sign. Or it could be from holding off on your biologics. Usually a herxheimer will lessen as you maintain the dose as it's an equilibrium between die off and detox. I think this is honestly where herbs become useful. Finding one that's going to help your symptoms without compromising your immune system. Stephen Buhner has some masterpieces on treating Lyme herbally that if anything are simply a good read to understand your options
