Something odd is happening to me and I wondered if others could shed some light.
I've been going through treatment for Lyme and co-infections for a little over a year. Have seen gradual improvement of my symptoms over time, and as of recently have felt probably at about
80% - 90%. (Knock on wood.)
I'm pretty sure I've had Lyme disease for over half my life. I grew up in New York State and recall multiple tick bites, but I never got the bull's eye rash -- which is why I was utterly shocked when my western blot came back all lit up like a Christmas tree back in late 2015. At that point my health had completely fallen apart, but I had no idea what was wrong with me. Thank God the practitioner I was seeing was alert
to the possibility of Lyme and recommended I get tested. I had always been told that the way you know you've contracted Lyme after a tick bite is if the rash shows up. I didn't know that it shows up in some but not all cases. So I was truly stunned by my diagnosis.
Now, having stopped all antibiotics as of about
a month ago after being on them for over a year, and just as I'm starting to feel better, suddenly, I'M SEEING THE RASH. It's on my left forearm, and it's very faint, but there's no mistaking it -- a blotchy oval surrounded by a concentric oval. It's funny, the center part of the bull's eye has been incredibly tender for the last week or so. It was sensitive before the area became demarcated with the rash. I've read that erythema migrans isn't usually painful. This manifestation of it is definitely painful.
I feel like Bella Swan in Twilight after she gets bitten by the tracker, James, and Edward sucks the vampire venom out: the site of the bite burns and throbs long after the wound has healed. (Forgive the YA cultural reference -- for some reason I just can't stop thinking about
it!
)
Has this happened to anyone else towards the "end" of their treatment? (The scare quotes are because of course I'm scared this is only a temporary upswing -- I've definitely had major setbacks after starting to feel better before.) Should I be worried about
re-exposure (i.e., another tick bite) if I'm seeing this now?
