Hi friends,

Was just reading through this thread and was hoping for some clarification. Traveler, your explanation of Lyme testing is very helpful. You mention that Igm shows an active infection while igg indicates that you've had Lyme for a long time. With my igenex test, I am Igm positive and igg negative but I've been dealing with symptoms for close to 20 years. Since my igg is negative, do you think my test is a false positive? (I hope this post makes sense!) Anyone have thoughts on this? Thanks for reading and for the help smile

I was confused about this too. The difference is not old and new infection, it is active and inactive. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Hope this helps.

The testing is just a tool and all diagnosis should be made by your symptoms.

On the bottom of your Igenex test is does say: Diagnosis should not be based on laboratory tests alone. Results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical symptoms and patient history.

The IgM only means that your body is now producing antibodies to the bacteria again - it means nothing for how long you may have had the infections.

I had completely negative Western Blots (with the exception of Band 41) until after I had had a full 12 months of treatment for Lyme -even though I had the infections for over 40 years by then. When I did get the CDC positive tests, I was positive only on the IgM, I believe - but that was more than enough for me.

Had appt with IDMD and received following Quest results:

Salmonella positive
Campylobacter jejuni positive
Ehrlichia chaffeensis positive
Mycoplasma pneumoniae positive
Lyme elisa negative
Lyme western blot negative.

In February the Lyme Elisa at Quest was positive.

IDMD says no Lyme but yes on Ehrlichia. Doc says the E. chaffeensis is an east coast bug. I live on the west coast but spend time each summer on the east coast. I don't know what to make of the rest. Anyone aware if any of the other above listed bugs can be had from tick bite? Going on Friday to LLMD in SF.

Yep, that's the trouble with ID docs. They don't understand that once you are positive for Lyme - it doesn't go away on it's own!

Once you have Lyme, the immune function lowers, so it's much easier to pick up any infection, but most of those are common co-infections that come along with Lyme from the tick or other bug.
