Dear all,

I have a tricky question about antibiotic resistance: do you know, if an organism gains resistance against a drug , will it have also resistance other drugs from the same class?

In particular: if I have an infection (not borrelia, but related to lyme) and this bacteria has resistance against tetracycicline, could it be possible that it is still suspectible to e.g. lymecycline (which is also from tetracycline class, but a slightly other compund)?
It would be so-so good to know!

I don't think that is the case.

But I've been reading more about persistence vs resistance lately.

Some LLMD's say you just need to keep at it.

I don't really know the answer to this.

But to add to the confusion here is what I do know.

My daughter was allergic to penicillin at age 5. Thereafter no doctor would prescribe her any drug related to penicillin.

So this makes me wonder if allergic reactions are like resistance???? I do not know.

From what I understand about allergies, PeteZa, because my daughter inherited that kind of thing from her father, not me, there is a glitch in the system that will read a certain substance as an invading enemy and the the part of the white blood cells that are supposed to create the antibodies for what they've been 'told' is an invasion, those antibodies then attach themselves to mast cells and basophils in the body.

And then you have the sometimes horrid reaction.

I don't know about resistance working like that, but allergy reactions do.

For instance I had a bad reaction (facial, throat swelling, rash) to cephalexin once, and I am to avoid taking any abx in that class, according the the Drs.


I think this abx resistance stuff is just a smoke screen. How is it that they are so scared of treating us with Doxy for more than 3 weeks, yet folks with Acne problems (my ex husband was one), will be prescribed tetracycline for months to years?

Yes - and I recently read that rheumatic fever is sometimes treated up to 5 years.

My own GP said tuberculosis treatment can take a year to a year and s half sometimes.

Resistance may not happen for Lyme and cos because the bacteria are slower replicating than other bacteria.

Remember that many instances of resistance is actually from the critters hiding in biofilms or simply escaping to an area that is not accessible to the abx. Then when the levels drop they come back out. If in biofilms, secondary treatment to address the armor is sometimes required. In the case of borrelia, it will change forms as necessary to avoid the treatment,

Exactly. Going deep into tissue/bone and what you said is a form of resistance. When Drs. say "resistance" it's usually translated to "tolerance".

But, don't they have to come out eventually to replicate? Still would be better to attack with more than one method, they can't be that fast.

No, in my case resistance is really resistance. Lab gave me a list of drugs (for suspectibility/resistance in a test tube).
