New probiotics causing diarrhea?

Hi all,

My teen daughter is being treated for Lyme. Her LLMD has her gradually adding each antibiotic and supplement. I appreciate this gentle approach.

Last night I increased my daughter's probiotic and this morning she has been having diarrhea. There isn't anything else we have changed in the last three days. Can a probiotic do that? Maybe come sort of yeast die-off? Any thoughts?

probiotics ruined my life from last 12 months.i had condition called d lactac acidos induced by probiotics.this is defiently worser then dieses itself

Yes, it's not common but it can cause diahrrea and there could be some die off symptoms. This die off reaction is your marker and tells you if you are just wasting your time. You are looking for this.

I have had a probiotic cause diarrhea. I stopped that brand and tried another and was fine.

Now I get my probiotics in my food. Sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, kombucha, yogurt and kefir. I don't do very much of the yogurt or kefir.... they usually have a high sugar content. I do the rest though.

And, you don't have to do a whole bowl of kraut, a tablespoon is so good for you. Same with the kimchi. We now have fermented beets and carrots at our health food store. I love those to just grab as a snack.

The diarrhea is a symptom of her body suddenly getting help most likely. It could be a die off of candida or other fungal/yeast die off, but it could be that her body just suddenly got some help it's been needing as well - unless it's 'extreme' diarrhea. If it's more like water than anything (sorry for the TMI!!!), and continues for most of the day, stop the probiotics and call the doctor.

If, on the other hand, her bowels are loose, or even watery, but don't stay that way for more than a day or two (three at most), then it may be only a period of adjustment.

If you can reduce the amount she taking with each dose, that will ease her into it better, and is a good approach. The only time I start with high doses of probiotics is when I know I'm already in some 'trouble' with my intestines and need a lot of support quickly - and I get a lot of gas and cramping when I do that, but at that point, it's the lesser of two evils for me.

If she begins to have die off symptoms, it could be that she had something like Candida going on/starting and may or may not need more support to overcome it. If it continues, that's the time to go back to her doc and ask more questions.

abhi - are you perhaps lactose intolerant?

Most articles point to bowel resection patients as having this condition (d lactic acidosis), but this article is thinking 'outside the box':
