Wearing pet tick flea/collars....around your lower legs..funny thought

Maybe a 'set' of them - lower legs, upper legs and maybe one on each arm?

I totally agree - pretty resourceful idea in a pinch and probably fairly effective. Certainly better than nothing.

But man, I wouldn't even put one of those things on my dog if I didn't have to. They are poison.

Since you live in an area where there are few ticks, it may be enough for you, but down here where I live - it's common to see quite a few in a day, especially as summer sets in. I won't 'try' something that has not been proven to ward off large numbers of ticks and for an extended period of time. If I have to reapply every 20 minutes to an hour, then I'm not protected the way I need to be.

This does not mean that I'm not watching for an EO recipe that actually works at this level though! I'd LOVE to get away from the chemicals! But I can't keep risking getting reinfected for it.

@ astroman-That's not a bad idea actually. I was going to order a natural one for my dog. Maybe I will order a few extra for myself and hubby.

Earlier this spring, I bought a flea and tick collar for my labrador because I was finding 7 or more ticks on her during and after our walk.

I put the collar on her and go on our walk. The whole time my face is burning. I thought oh no, I am getting the nerve issues in my face? Then I thought maybe I was getting shingles because the pain was running in a line down my cheek and into my lip, and I was thinking maybe it is running along the nerve. I was having nerve problems in my face prior to this so I thought that maybe it just worse all of a sudden.

I get home and my dog starts scratching at her ear. By now I took off the collar because we were home from our walk. She is constantly at her ears. Meanwhile I am having so much burning pain on my face. I look at her ears, they were flaming red inside and blistering. She has flopped over ears not ones that stand upright. I realize maybe it was from the collar and I had it on my hands and touched my face. I washed my face with soap and water and the burning stopped. I ran to wash my dog from head to toe and wiped her ears inside with soapy cotton balls.

I had to take her to the vet because she got chemical burns in her ears. I could not understand how it didn't bother the rest of her just in side her ears. The vet tells me the collars emit a powdery poison that floats all around her. Her fur protected the rest of her but the inside of her ears were vulnerable.

The vet told me to stay away from those collars because they are very dangerous. Well at least for myself and my dog they were very nasty.

My llmd advised me to use rose geranium oil to keep ticks away. I place a drop on my dogs fur between her shoulder blades and on the back at the base of her tail. On myself I put a drop behind each ear and on each ankle. That stuff smells, and I don't find it pleasant. I have no idea how that keeps ticks away, because I cannot imagine ticks have a nose and smell the oil but what do I know?? But I haven't pulled a tick yet since using it.

I'll never be sure if it is from the essential oil or just managed to avoid them. Also, there is the chance they got into her fur faster than I can find them. (I stop so many times during our walk and check her over and any time she sticks her head into brush or grass she gets a once over-so I check her a hundred times I swear because her whole purpose in life is to sniff around at the chipmunks hiding spots...she never gets the chipmunk but always catches ticks....lucky us) We shall see what the rest of the season brings us. Fingers crossed.

Just wondered about this. Obviously a fashion NOT. But if your in the woods, and wearing a flea and tick collar on lower legs....does anyone care? LOL

Hey just to let you all know, the next tick I find is going to be used for experimental purposes. It will be exposed to all sorts of treatments. Different essential oils and then move on to the sprays. Then when I am ready to kill it, I will use the stuff my hubby sprays into our woods and lawn....just to see how fast the sucker dies.

I'll keep you all posted.

hahah, now that I want a tick to torture with my experiment I can't seem to find one. Always the way. hhahah

I collected a handful of them last year and put them in an empty plastic container with about 2 tablespoons of Ortho Bug Be Gone, to see if they'd die and how long it would take.

Naturally I forgot about them and my friend dumped the contents so I need to repeat the experiment.

Me likes the home brewed "tick killing experiments".

"We applied liquid concentrate and granular formulations of Bayer Advanced Complete Insect Killer, Spectracide Triazicide Insect Killer, and Ortho Bug-B-Gon to forest plots using equipment available for purchase at retail home improvement outlets. "

This is what the study says about the granules:
"Granular formulations provided less consistent results, including lower 1-day knockdown rates for both species, due to very dry conditions, which prevented adequate release of the active ingredient from the carrier materials. After it rained in the study area, 7 and 14 days after application, we observed ≥99% suppression of both species. "

And with several years of personal experience with the granules, I have found them to be quite effective, although trying to time it just right with the rain is a bit of a pain. The rain can't be too heavy, as it will wash them away, and even if it's a light rain that won't actually move the granules, if it's too much rainfall, then it's washed/flushed out of the ground no matter which type is used.
