I have had low WBC since treatment started over 2 1/2 years ago.
Just in the past six months has it been in range or just under range.
My total WBC was often 3.5 or less...even in the 2's at times.
But, it was my lymphocytes that were low - and neutrophils were just in range.
Our range starts at 4.0....so if you were here = your son would still be in range.
My regular Dr. (not lyme literate) wasn't concerned...she said my body was fighting an infection.

Many believe that Lyme patients have low WBC due to us being on pharma ABX or herbal antimicrobials the body sees no need to produce high amounts of WBCs to fight the infection(s).

I too have had a lowering of WBC while on treatment. Just keep an eye on it at this point.
It could be from the treatment itself.
It could be from anaplasma, babesia, bartonella, etc., that all seems to negatively effect WBC (usually neutrophils) as they're targeted.
It's really difficult to know for sure.

I've also had low neutrophil counts (ranged from 1200-1900) and recently found out lyme was causing my symptoms for the past 2 years. I wouldn't be able to tell you with high certainty why the neutrophil count is low since I am not familiar with the herbal protocols. However, I digged a little into this in the past since I thought I had nutritional deficiency causing low neutrophil counts and my symptoms. Among the reasons why these things can go low are:
-Low copper: either due to low copper in diet or induced by zinc excess. I've actually read a case on pubmed on a kid who's brought to the ER due to neutr
openia caused by excessive zinc lowering copper levels. Zinc is great but too much of anything is not good.
-low vitamins B12 and folate: needed for cell replication, neutrophils are fragile and have a very short lifespan compared to other white blood cells, so they need to regenerate fast thats why they they tend to go down first with nutritional problems.
Have you checked your other (complete blood count) markers on your report such as MCH. If its too high (90's) then it may indicate a vitamin problem.

I have been told by a couple of doctors that my chronically low (yes even off treatment for over a decade) WBC count is an indicator of chronic viral issues. Sometimes the WBC's have been in the two's. None of the regular doctors really even blink at it - just take a wait and see attitude. I have read this a few times. My immune system not terribly robust, I assume. I also wonder if this is why I have only tested positive once on all the lyme tests I have had?
My red cells are also always high. I always think that this is odd since I have babesia. Doctor at Hansa said that this is an indicator of chronic battle against bacteria and viruses.
