Coconut oil, like any other oil, is a refined food. My personal opinion is it doesn't make sense to eat spoonfuls of it, like some do. There's so much hysteria about eating "Healthy Fat," but how much fat do people think we need? If one is eating a diet comprised of natural foods, plenty of fat will come along in the food's natural package. I don't see the point in going out of one's way to eat fat in isolation. It's another fad. And, of course, it's calorie dense. No matter what people say, calories do matter.
except for people (like me) taking Mepron - we need to take fat with it...so I do a spoon of coconut oil and a spoon of peanut butter, then eat a meal.Having fat with medicine and/or supplements makes sense, of course. I guess my point was more about
the amount. I don't believe much is required - especially if the meal also has fat.
The "Rest of the story" (to invoke Paul Harvey) is that I jumped on the coconut oil bandwagon - just like I did with Paleo, Low-Carb, Intermittent Fasting, High-Intensity Training, and many other diet-/lifestyle-related matters. In the end, I feel confident that too few carbs and too much exercise is what caused me to crash. I think I did my immune system a great disservice. Then came the tick bite.
Not surprisingly, when I stopped shoveling-down coconut oil down the hatch, without changing anything else (I was unable to exercise at that point), I dropped 10 pounds without trying. When I *was* exercising, I couldn't drop that weight. But, in addition to coconut oil, I was also eating lots of eggs, butter, bacon, nuts, etc. Which is why I was unable to lose weight.
So, for me, the moral of the story is to stop getting my dietary advice from pop culture!
